Practice. If one has not cultivated generosity and discipline, etc., even if one possesses noble lineage, beautiful appearance, and the virtues of youth, as well as extremely great strength and abundant wealth, one will not attain happiness in the next life. Even if one's lineage is low, but one does not engage in evil deeds, and possesses virtues such as generosity and discipline, just as a river in summer fills the ocean, happiness will surely increase in the next life. From virtuous and non-virtuous actions, in the next world, happiness and suffering will definitely arise, therefore, abandon evil and strive to perform virtuous deeds. Those without faith act as they please. Thus it is said. Unperformed actions do not meet: If one has not accumulated the actions that become the cause of experiencing happiness and suffering, one will never experience the results of that action, happiness and suffering. Even those who enjoy the results of the countless accumulations of merit by the Buddha Shakyamuni, do not need to accumulate all the causes of that result, but must accumulate a portion. Performed actions are not wasted: The virtuous and non-virtuous actions that have been performed produce agreeable and disagreeable results. In particular, in the "Praise of Excellence" it is said: The Brahmins say that virtue and non-virtue transfer like giving and receiving. You said that performed actions are not wasted, and unperformed actions do not meet. Thus it is said. In the "Samadhi King Sutra" it is also said: Even if done, it will not fail to touch, nor will one feel what another has done. Thus it is said. In the "Vinaya Pitaka" it is also said: Actions, even after hundreds of kalpas, will not be wasted; when the conditions and time are right, they will become fruits for sentient beings. Thus it is said. Second, thinking separately is divided into two: mainly explaining the ten paths of action, and determining actions and their results. First, since the cause and effect of happiness and suffering are thus determined, and actions increase greatly, unperformed actions do not meet, and performed actions are not wasted, what kind of understanding of actions and their results should one first generate, and then adopt or abandon? In general, the gates for engaging in good and bad conduct are definitely three, and even if all the virtuous and non-virtuous actions of the three gates are not included in the ten paths of action, the general outline or rough aspects of virtue and non-virtue, and the extremely large basis of faults, the Buddha, the Bhagavan

He summarized the key points into the ten deeds of black karma, and seeing that if these were abandoned, the key points of great significance would also be summarized into ten, he thus proclaimed the ten deeds of white karma. As it is said in the Abhidharmakosha, "From these, when summarized in brief, the various differences between virtue and non-virtue, the paths of karma are said to be ten." And also in the Vinayavibhanga, "Guarding speech and well subduing the mind, not doing any non-virtuous deeds with the body, if one well cultivates these three paths of karma, then one will obtain the path spoken of by the righteous." Thus it is proclaimed. Knowing the ten deeds of black karma and their results, and restraining them even from their motivation, so that the three doors of body, speech, and mind are not at all mixed with them, and relying on these ten virtuous paths of karma, this is the indispensable basis for all three vehicles and the accomplishment of the two benefits of beings. Therefore, the Buddhas repeatedly praised it from many doors. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by the Ocean King, "The so-called virtuous dharmas are the fundamental support for the prosperity of gods and humans. They are the fundamental support for the enlightenment of hearers and solitary Buddhas. They are the fundamental support for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. What is the fundamental support? It is the ten virtuous deeds." And as the Dragon King said, "For example, all villages, cities, towns, regions, lands, and the palaces of kings, all grass, trees, herbs, and trees, all the limits of activities, all collections of seeds, and all crops, growing, cultivating, harvesting, and appearing, all depend on the earth to exist, and the place of these is the earth. Dragon King, similarly, these ten virtuous paths of karma are the place of birth as gods and humans, and of obtaining the fruits of learning and non-learning ascetics, and of the enlightenment of solitary Buddhas, and of all the practices of Bodhisattvas, and of all the Buddha dharmas." Thus it is proclaimed. Therefore, the meaning of praising the discipline of abandoning the ten non-virtuous deeds in the Sutra of the Ten Grounds, is also stated in the Entering the Middle Way, "Ordinary beings, hearers, and self-awakened ones, and all the good determinations of the Buddha's children, the cause of higher rebirth is only discipline, therefore one should diligently protect morality."
