Pages 201 to 300. Pages 201 to 300. What pleases and delights the gods is entering the ranks of the holy ones and pleasing the teachers and so on. How do the gods rejoice? So-and-so is endowed with refuge in us, and after dying and transmigrating from there, they are born here, possessing refuge and abiding many times. Thinking, "That will become our friend," they rejoice in their hearts and especially praise, which is special praise. Among the eight benefits arising from the oral instructions, entering the ranks of Buddhists is: Generally speaking, although there appear to be many ways of establishing inner and outer, it is said that Jowo (Atisha) and Shantipa distinguish by refuge. Therefore, it refers to those who have obtained refuge and have not abandoned it. Therefore, to initially enter the ranks of Buddhists, one must sincerely hold the Three Jewels as teachers and so on. Without this, no matter what good deeds one does, one will not enter the ranks of Buddhists. Becoming the basis of all vows is: The Commentary on the Treasury states: "Those who take refuge are the gateway to all who properly take vows." And also in the Seventy Verses on Refuge: "Taking refuge in the Three Jewels, that is the root of the eight vows." It is said that refuge stabilizes the thought of Nirvana and is intended to generate vows from that. The obscurations of previously accumulated karma are lessened and exhausted: In the Compendium of Trainings, in the section showing that refuge purifies sins: Here, the Jataka of the Pig is taken as an example. Thus, like the son of a god who was going to be born as a pig, because he took refuge, he was not born there, because taking refuge purified the cause of bad rebirths. Those who have gone for refuge to the Buddha will not go to bad rebirths. Having abandoned the human body, they will obtain the body of a god. Thus, it is also said of the Dharma and the Sangha. Therefore, some of the previously accumulated sins will be lessened, and some will be exhausted. Accumulating great merit is: As previously explained. Not falling into bad rebirths is also: To be known from the previous. Not being obstructed by the obstacles of humans and non-humans is: The sutra says: "People who are frightened by fear mostly go to mountains and forests, and gardens and so on."

Are the places of offering. Taking refuge in trees and the like, That refuge is not the main one, That refuge is not the supreme one, By relying on that refuge, One will not be liberated from all suffering. Whenever and wherever one takes refuge in the Buddha, The Dharma, and the Sangha, Suffering, the arising of all suffering, The complete cessation of suffering, The eightfold noble path of bliss, Will lead to nirvana, And the four noble truths, Are viewed with wisdom. That refuge is the main one, That refuge is the supreme one. By relying on that refuge, One will be liberated from all suffering. As it is said. Here, the stories of the accomplishment of heretical wind snares and the like are taken as examples. The accomplishment of all that is thought of is that at the beginning of accomplishing any Dharma-endowed activity, one should make offerings to the Three Jewels, and after taking refuge, pray for accomplishment, then it will be easily accomplished. Quickly attaining Buddhahood, as it is said in the Lion's Roar Sutra: "With faith, one will abandon non-leisure." As it is said, having obtained the leisure and endowments, and having met with refuge, one should study the special path, and thereby one will attain Buddhahood before long. Having remembered the benefits in this way, one should take refuge three times a day and three times a night. The Three Jewels should not be abandoned or protected even for the sake of laughter or for the sake of life, for the body, life, and possessions will inevitably be separated unwillingly. If one abandons the Three Jewels for the sake of those, then suffering will arise continuously in all lifetimes. No matter what happens, one should not abandon refuge, and one should repeatedly vow that one should not speak words of abandoning refuge even for the sake of mere laughter. Wherever one goes, one should train in taking refuge in that Tathagata, such instructions have been spoken by the predecessors, but the source has not been seen. Thus, the six common trainings are as they appear in the commentary on the Lamp for the Path, and the individual trainings, the first three come from the Sutra Pitaka, and the latter three come from the Six Limbs of Taking Refuge, as it is said: "Buddha images and verses, The yellow patches that are sewn, Regard the teacher with faith. For all that is spoken from the mouth, Slander"
