Not placing [it] on the crown of the head, one should regard pure and impure individuals as supreme. Thus it is said. From those arising from the collection of definitive meanings, in the words of the Karmapas, these were heard by us together with the monastic at Neu Zurpa and Sung Tangpa, and they arise from the Lamrim transmitted from Lumba-wa. How those vows, when contradicted, become causes for decline and abandonment: Some consider that abandoning occurs when one contradicts the first three vows of each, along with the six of constantly taking refuge, not abandoning even for the sake of one's life, and making offerings to the Three Jewels; others consider that abandoning occurs with the nine that contradict the latter three vows of each, while the remainder become causes for decline. However, contradicting not abandoning even for the sake of one's life is the actual abandonment of taking refuge, and similarly, even if one does not abandon the Three Jewels, if one holds dualistic clinging to the three, such as teachers who do not accord with them, one also contradicts not speaking differently, and one abandons because one does not have faith in refuge. If these do not arise, then it is merely contradicting the vows, and it is not a cause for abandonment, so it is thought. Thus, taking refuge is the great gate for entering the teachings of the Buddha, and if there is something that is not merely the words of taking refuge, it is because it relies on an extraordinary power, so it is not overwhelmed by outer and inner obstacles, and the distinctions of qualities are easily generated and difficult to decline, so they will increase from above to above, so as previously explained, taking refuge through the doors of remembering fear and qualities, etc., and striving not to transgress its vows is of great importance. Thus, when one remembers death and fears thinking of being born in the lower realms after death, the refuge that protects from that is the Three Jewels, and when one takes refuge in them and acts without contradicting their vows, how will refuge protect? The Compendium says: "The path that cuts the pain of existence, I have shown to you all. The Thus-Gone One is the teacher, you all should do it." Thus, the Buddha is the teacher of refuge, and the Sangha is the companion for accomplishing refuge, so the actual refuge is the Dharma Jewel, for obtaining it is for liberation from fear. That ultimate Dharma Jewel is also at the time of the first practitioner, only able to abandon a small portion of the faults.

Giving up and only cultivating some qualities, the two realizations are said to be more and more superior. Other than that, it does not arise suddenly. Therefore, at this time, one should be skilled in distinguishing between virtue and non-virtue, along with their results, and practice taking and abandoning accordingly, which should be regarded as Dharma. If one does not take and abandon properly after considering the two karmas and their results in the long term, the cause of falling into bad destinies cannot be reversed. Even if one fears bad destinies, one will not be liberated from that fear. Therefore, in order to be saved from bad destinies at the time of results, one must correct engaging in non-virtuous minds at the time of causes. This depends on gaining faith in karma and its results. Secondly, there are three aspects to generating the faith of trust, which is the root of all happiness and well-being: thinking about karma and its results in general, thinking about them specifically, and how to engage and disengage after thinking. The first has two aspects: the actual way of thinking in general, and thinking separately. The first has four points. The way karma is certain is: whether it is an ordinary person or a noble one, any feeling of happiness with a soothing quality, even the slightest joy that arises from a cool breeze for beings born in hell, all arise from accumulating virtuous karma in the past. There is no basis for happiness to arise from non-virtuous karma. Any feeling of suffering with a tormenting quality, even that which arises in the mindstream of an arhat, all arise from accumulating non-virtue in the past. There is no basis for suffering to arise from virtuous karma. As it says in the Precious Garland: "From non-virtue comes all suffering, and likewise all bad destinies. From virtue comes all good destinies, and happiness in all lives." Therefore, happiness and suffering do not arise from no cause, nor do they arise from discordant causes such as Ishvara, but from the general karma of virtue and non-virtue come the general happiness and suffering, and the various differences of happiness and suffering also arise separately from the various differences of the two karmas without any confusion. Gaining certainty about this certainty or infallibility of karma and its results is praised as the correct view of all Buddhists, the basis of all white dharmas. The principle of the great increase of karma: even from a small virtuous karma,
