One should meditate with focused attention. As stated in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "Recitations and ascetic practices, even if practiced for a long time, if done with a distracted mind, are said by the wise to be meaningless." Because all virtuous deeds done with a distracted mind are said to have small results. Also, as stated in the Sutra on Cultivating Faith in the Great Vehicle: "Son of good family, in whatever way bodhisattvas have faith in the Great Vehicle, no matter where it originates, it should be known that all of these arise from a non-distracted mind, properly attending to the meaning and the Dharma." Therefore, a non-distracted mind is one that does not stray from the virtuous object of focus. Meaning and Dharma refer to meaning and words, and properly attending means examining and contemplating with discriminating wisdom. This shows that both are necessary for accomplishing all qualities of Dharma. Therefore, for accomplishing all the qualities of the three vehicles, one needs either actual śamatha, which is a one-pointed concentration where the mind does not stray from the virtuous object of focus, or something in accordance with it, and either actual vipaśyanā, which is the discriminating wisdom that distinguishes the suchness and the extent of the virtuous object of focus, or something in accordance with it. Thus it is also stated in The Sagely Explanatory Sutra: "Maitreya, whether it is the śrāvakas, the bodhisattvas, or the tathāgatas, all worldly or transworldly virtuous dharmas should be known as the result of śamatha and vipaśyanā." Thus it is said. If one does not practice actual śamatha and vipaśyanā and what accords with them, then all the qualities of the three vehicles will not necessarily be the result of actual śamatha and vipaśyanā. Thus, among the eight sufferings, the first, contemplating the suffering of birth, has five aspects: Birth is suffering because it is connected with suffering, namely: the beings in hell, and the completely suffering pretas, and those born from a womb, and those born from an egg, these four are born with many intense feelings of suffering at the time of birth. Birth is suffering because it is connected with a bad situation, namely: all the formations of the three realms are afflicted with

Because it possesses unfavorable conditions that are in accordance with the faction, it is not suitable as a tool and cannot be controlled. Even when the actions of sentient beings in the three realms manifestly occur, they are related to unfavorable conditions that are in accordance with the faction of afflictions. In short, because it is related to the seeds of the arising, abiding, and increasing of afflictions, it is not suitable as a tool that can be used for virtue. Nor can it be controlled as one pleases. Birth is a place of suffering, therefore it is suffering: having taken birth in the three realms, based on that, suffering such as aging, sickness, and death will increase. Birth is a place of afflictions, therefore it is suffering: when born in samsara, the three poisons arise towards objects of attachment, objects of hatred, and objects that cause delusion. Because of that, the body and mind are not at all pacified, and one cannot abide in happiness from suffering, afflictions torment the body and mind from various doors. Birth is the nature of having to separate unwillingly, therefore it is suffering: the end of all those born does not transcend death, and that is also unwanted, therefore one only experiences suffering. Therefore, one should contemplate that at the time of birth, one is born accompanied by suffering and in unfavorable conditions, and that birth also brings aging and so on, and afflictions and death, and that they also cause suffering. In particular, what kind of suffering does one experience when dwelling in the womb? In the letter sent to the disciple, it says: "Utterly unbearable, foul-smelling, and impure things block the way, residing in a very narrow, dark, and dense place, having entered inside like a hell of the womb, one must shrink the whole body and endure great suffering." As it is said. The meaning of those words is: upon entering the womb, it is completely filled with many kinds of impure things, it is the place where thousands of kinds of worms dwell, it has two extremely foul-smelling doors, it has bone crevices and many holes, in the viscous mixture of urine, brain, meninges, and the collection of legs, below the stomach, above the large intestine, the mouth faces the spine, the back faces the skin of the abdomen, it relies on the monthly menstruation to sustain itself, the mother
