Because there is no happiness even in being born in a good rebirth, and one will certainly fall into the lower realms again, the end is bad. For example, it is like some people who are about to fall into a cliff, but rest on the edge of the cliff. The "Entering the Path of Conduct" says: "Good rebirths are repeatedly attained, and many pleasures are enjoyed, but after death, one falls into the unbearable sufferings of the lower realms for a long time." Also, "A Letter to a Disciple" says: "If one enters the wheel of samsara that is constantly turning, and thinks that it is happiness to dwell in it, then that person is certainly without freedom, and will gradually wander in hundreds and thousands of realms, both equal and unequal." Therefore, one should be as disgusted with good rebirths as with bad rebirths. The "Four Hundred Verses" says: "The wise fear even the heavens as they fear hell, for all of them, there is hardly any existence that does not cause fear." Also, "The Collection of Precious Qualities" says: "Those who have a mind attached to samsara are constantly wandering." It means that from beginningless time, we have been accustomed to grasping at conditioned perfections as happiness, and to superimposing distinctions on the appearance of suffering. As an antidote to this habit, we should become accustomed to meditating on suffering and impurity, so that we can reverse these habits. If we do not meditate, then ignorance and desire will increase, leading to the cycle of samsara. Therefore, it is very important to meditate on the faults of samsara. Therefore, for the path of gradual training common to the intermediate person, the training of the mind is divided into four aspects: training the actual thought, measuring the degree to which it has arisen, dispelling wrong thoughts about it, and determining the nature of the path to liberation. The first aspect is divided into two parts: Identifying the mind that seeks liberation, and the means of generating it. The first part is: Liberation means freedom from bondage.

That is to say, karma and afflictions are the two factors that bind beings to samsara. Due to the power of these two, from the perspective of realms, there are three, such as the desire realm; from the perspective of destinies, there are five or six, such as gods; and from the perspective of birth places, there are four, such as womb-born. The aggregation of aggregates into a continuum is the nature of bondage, and liberation from that is liberation. The desire to attain liberation is the mind that seeks liberation as its goal. However, liberation is not merely the arising and ceasing of the actions of karma and afflictions, because beings do not remain in the second moment. This does not depend on factors such as cultivating antidotes, and thus everything would effortlessly be liberated, which would be a fault. Therefore, if the antidote does not arise, there will be a future connection to the continuum, while the power of the arising antidote will cause the connection to the continuum to cease. Second, the method for generating that is: for example, the desire to pacify the suffering of thirst depends on seeing the unpleasant aspect of being tormented by thirst; similarly, the desire to attain liberation that pacifies the suffering of the aggregates of appropriation also depends on seeing the faults of the aggregates of appropriation as being of the nature of suffering. Therefore, if one does not generate the mind of wanting to abandon existence after contemplating the faults of existence, one will not generate the desire to pacify suffering. As the Four Hundred Verses says: "For whom there is no weariness here, How can there be reverence for peace? Like one's own home, Existence is for sentient beings, It is very difficult to depart from here." Therefore, there are two methods for generating the pursuit of liberation: contemplating from the perspective of suffering and origination, and contemplating from the perspective of the twelve links of dependent origination. The first is further divided into two: contemplating the faults of suffering, the truth of samsara, and contemplating the order of engagement in the origination of samsara. The first is further divided into two: explaining the intention of the Buddha in first teaching the truth of suffering among the four truths, and actually meditating on suffering. The first is: origination is the cause and suffering is the result, therefore origination comes first and suffering comes later. So why did the Bhagavan not conform to the order of things themselves, but say, "O monks, this is the noble truth of suffering, this is the noble truth of origination"? To this, the Teacher did not violate the order of cause and effect.
