It is as taught regarding the likes of the Uninterrupted Realm. If, even though Ajatashatru and those who have not killed have generated other virtuous minds, why are they born in the Uninterrupted Realm without their karma being exhausted? It is taught that birth in the Uninterrupted Realm and so forth is to generate faith in their karma and its results. It is not the case that all karmas are not exhausted without any remainder. Like bouncing back from striking a silk balloon, they are born there and liberated. They are not even touched by the garland of hellfire and so forth. In that way, it is also established that sins are completely uprooted, and it is not the case that karma has no result. Thus it is said. Regarding the uncertainty of some individuals' differences, for example, King Brave regretted killing the flower Zla-mdzes, built stupas, made extremely vast offerings, confessed sins three times a day for fifty-five trillion years, and maintained pure discipline, but after death was still born in the Uninterrupted Realm and experienced endless suffering such as blindness for twelve quadrillion kalpas, as stated in the Samadhiraja Sutra. Even so, confession does not become meaningless, because if one does not confess, one will have to experience even greater and longer suffering. Even if the collected confessions can completely cleanse away the remainder, there is a great difference between the purity of not being tainted by faults from the beginning and the purity after confession. For example, in the Pratimoksha Sutra, it says that if a root downfall occurs, even if one takes the bodhisattva vows, one can restore them, but it is impossible to attain the first bhumi in that lifetime. In the Sutra of Condensed Discrimination, it also says: "Bhagavan, if someone, under the influence of evil friends, abandons the Dharma and does such a thing, Bhagavan, how will he be liberated at that time?" When he asked that, the Bhagavan said to Manjushri, who had become a youth: "Manjushri, if one confesses faults as faults three times a day for seven years, then one will become purified, and after that, at the very least, it will take ten kalpas to obtain patience." Thus, even if sins are purified as quickly as possible, it is said that it takes ten kalpas to obtain patience. That

The meaning of complete purification is: completely purifying the production of undesirable fruits. However, the arising of realizations of the path, etc., is extremely distant, so one should strive to not be tainted from the beginning. Therefore, the noble ones said that even for the sake of life, they would not knowingly commit even the slightest transgression. If purification through confession and not having arisen in the first place were no different, then there would be no need to do so. It also appears in the world that although injuries to limbs, etc., can be repaired later, they are not the same as not being injured in the first place. Therefore, through effort, it is said in the Compendium: 'Having committed sins and not done meritorious deeds, deviating from the Dharma and obtaining what is not Dharma, a person with sinful deeds will be afraid of death, like a broken boat sinking in a great river.' 'Having done meritorious deeds and not committed sins, practicing the Dharma according to the ways of the noble ones, he will never be afraid of death, like a stable boat going to the other shore.' As it is said, one should not act like the former, but should strive to act like the latter. Even if one speaks many words of reason, if one engages in carelessness, the meaning is small. Even if one knows little Dharma, if one cultivates what one knows by accepting and rejecting, the meaning is great. It is said in the Compendium: 'Even if one speaks many words with reason, if one is careless and impure, one will not act accordingly. Like a herdsman counting the livestock of others, they do not obtain the share of a renunciate.' 'Even if one speaks few words with reason, following the Dharma and practicing the Dharma, abandoning desire, hatred, and delusion, they obtain the share of a renunciate.' A renunciate delights in mindfulness and sees carelessness as fear, rescuing himself from the lower realms, like an elephant emerging from a mud pit. A renunciate delights in mindfulness and sees carelessness as fear, shaking off all sins, like the wind blowing away the leaves of a tree. Thus, in the Letter to a Friend, it is said: 'If you desire to attain heaven and liberation, then please cultivate correct views. Even if a person with wrong views practices virtue, all the ripening results will be unpleasant.' As it is said, properly observing dependent origination, and the two—cause and effect—is the basis for accomplishing all vehicles and all the purposes of beings.
