Because it is indispensable. Taking what was said earlier as an example, mindfulness and recollection, the Sutra of the Wise and the Foolish, the Hundred Karmas, the Hundred Jatakas, the transmissions of the Vinaya Pitaka, and other scriptures as well, by reading them, one should generate a strong and lasting conviction, and this should be regarded as the key point. Second, the standard for the arising of this thought is: previously, the pursuit of this life was not false, but the pursuit of the next life was merely a following of the words. When the position shifts, and the pursuit of the next life becomes the main thing, while this life is merely incidental, then it has arisen. However, because it needs to be stabilized, even after it has arisen, one should strive to practice. Third, dispelling wrong views about this is: the scriptures say that one must turn one's mind away from all the perfections of samsara, and some people take this as a basis for confusion. They think that the higher realms of body, enjoyment, etc., are samsara, so one should not generate a pursuit of them. In reality, there are two kinds of things to be pursued: those that need to be pursued temporarily and those that need to be pursued ultimately. The perfections of the body, etc., of samsara, even those who seek liberation need to pursue temporarily, because it is through this basis that one will eventually attain definite goodness through a gradual succession. All the higher realms of body, enjoyment, and retinue are not included in samsara, because the ultimate perfections of body, etc., are the Form Body, and the wealth of its pure land, and its retinue. With this in mind, the Ornament for Clear Realization says: "Enjoyment and body are perfect, and the retinue is extremely perfect, this is higher birth." It is taught that the first four perfections accomplish higher birth, and many texts say that these accomplish the Form Body. Therefore, those who practice clear realization, because they practice morality, generosity, patience, etc., which are extremely numerous and excellent, for a long time, they also pursue the results of these virtues, that is, the extremely excellent higher realms of body, etc. The ultimate accomplishment of definite goodness is, as the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life says: "Relying on the boat of the human body, one can cross the great river of suffering."

O Tara! As it is said, one must rely on the body of a good rebirth, represented by humans, to cross the ocean of existence and go to omniscience. Moreover, since this must be done through many lifetimes, this body is the cause of accomplishment, and the essential discipline is the root of the path. However, the body of a good rebirth also has incomplete qualities, possessing only one-sided advantages. Therefore, although one practices the path, the progress is small, so a complete body is needed. For this, it is not enough to keep the vows of a novice monk, etc., which are incomplete, so one must strive to keep the vows of a fully ordained monk, etc., which are complete. Some say that keeping the vows is for the sake of attaining a good rebirth, but this can also be achieved by keeping the one-day vows, so what is the use of the difficult and insignificant monkhood? Others say that the purpose of individual liberation is for the sake of becoming an Arhat, but a monk is not allowed to be ordained until he is twenty years old, and an Arhat can also be attained in the body of a layperson, so that body is praised. What is the use of the difficult and insignificant monkhood? Those who say this should know that they are talking nonsense without knowing the essence of the teachings. One should take the lower vows as the basis, take the higher vows, and strive to keep the vows complete. The mind training for the stages of the path common to the lesser person has been explained. To the venerable and compassionate ones, I prostrate with respect. Thus, by remembering death and contemplating the manner of falling into the lower realms after death, one turns away from this world and seeks the happiness of future lives. By taking refuge in the common refuge and being certain of the results of black and white karma, one strives to abandon evil and cultivate virtue, and although one can attain the state of a good rebirth, here we do not consider that to be enough. When the thought common to the lesser person has arisen, and the thought common to the intermediate person, which is aversion to all of samsara, has arisen, then relying on that, one generates the mind of enlightenment and leads to the great person. Therefore, one must train the mind of the intermediate person. Thus, even if one attains the state of gods and humans, one has not transcended the suffering of conditioned existence, so it is a perversion to naturally cling to it as happiness.
