Conversely, there is great significance in practice in saying it in reverse, so there is no fault. What is that? Like this, if the trainee himself does not first generate an undeluded desire to be liberated from samsara, then the root is cut off, so how can he be led to liberation? Therefore, at first, the trainee is obscured by the darkness of ignorance and deceived by the perverted view that holds the perfections of samsara to be happiness. The Four Hundred says: 'This ocean of suffering has no end in any way. Child, you are drowning in it, why do you not feel fear?' As it is said. This is not truly happiness, but suffering. Thus, having spoken of the various aspects of suffering, it is necessary to generate weariness, so the truth of suffering is spoken of first. Then, when one sees oneself fallen into the ocean of suffering and desires to be liberated from it, one sees that suffering must be reversed, and one knows that it will not be reversed if the cause is not reversed. Then, one wonders what kind of cause it is, and thus one comes to know the truth of the origin, so the truth of the origin is spoken of after that. Then, having generated the knowledge of the truth of the origin, that the suffering of samsara is produced by contaminated actions, and that actions are produced by afflictions, and that the root of afflictions is self-grasping, and having seen that self-grasping can also be reversed, one vows to manifest the cessation of suffering, so the truth of cessation is spoken of after that. Now, if the truth of suffering is taught, the desire for liberation will arise, so is it reasonable to teach the truth of cessation after the truth of suffering? There is no fault. Because at that time, although there is a desire for liberation, thinking 'if only I could attain the cessation of suffering,' one has not identified the cause of suffering, and one has not seen that the cause can be reversed, so one does not regard cessation as an object to be attained. Thus, when one regards liberation, cessation, as something to be manifested, one wonders what the path to go there is, and thus one enters the truth of the path, so the truth of the path is spoken of last. Thus, the Uttaratantra says: 'Disease is to be known, the cause of disease is to be abandoned, the state of bliss is to be attained, medicine is to be relied upon. Suffering, its cause, its cessation, and the path, are to be known, to be abandoned, to be realized, and to be relied upon.' As it is said.

Thus, the Four Noble Truths have been taught many times in both the Greater and Lesser Vehicles. The key points of entering into and turning away from samsara are summarized by the Sugata, so they are extremely important for accomplishing liberation. They are also a major summary of practice, so disciples must be guided in that order. If, through contemplating the truth of suffering, there is no genuine renunciation of samsara, then the desire to attain liberation will be mere words, and everything done will become the cause of suffering. If, through contemplating the truth of the origin, the root of samsara—karma and afflictions—is not well understood, then, like shooting an arrow without seeing the target, the key points of the path will be missed. Taking what is not the path of liberation from existence to be the path, effort will be fruitless. Furthermore, if the suffering and its origin to be abandoned are not understood, then the liberation that is the pacification of them will not be recognized, and the pursuit of liberation will be mere arrogance. Second, the actual contemplation of suffering is divided into two: Contemplating the general suffering of samsara, and contemplating individual sufferings. The first is divided into three: contemplating the eight sufferings, contemplating the six sufferings, and contemplating the three sufferings. The first is: From the "Letter to a Friend": "Poverty, lack of desires, and death, sickness, old age, and other sufferings, cause weariness with samsara, the source." Contemplate as it is said. The contemplation of weariness with samsara is: Thinking of it as the source of many sufferings. The sufferings are: the four explicitly shown, such as poverty and lack of desires, and the four included by the word "etc.," making eight. These eight were spoken by the Bhagavan in many sutras when identifying the truth of suffering. For all the cultivation of the medium and common objects, the common ones should be taken here as explained in the case of the small ones. For the uncommon cultivation materials, if there is sufficient intelligence, cultivate as it is written; if there is little intelligence, abandon the quotations and cultivate only the essence of the meaning that is appropriate to the occasion. Although these are analytical meditations, do not let the mind go to any virtuous, non-virtuous, or unspecified things other than those objects of meditation. Prevent the mind from being agitated, etc., on the object. Do not let it fall under the power of sleep, drowsiness, or sinking, but let awareness be very clear and lucid.
