So it is. Therefore, one should generate certainty about the dependent arising of karma, including cause and effect. Day and night, one should cut off the lower realms with a certain thought. First, if one is not skilled in distinguishing between cause and effect, and even if one knows a little but indulges in the three doors of body, speech, and mind, that is only opening the door to the lower realms. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by the Naga King Sagara: "Lord of Nagas, with one dharma, Bodhisattvas completely cut off rebirth in the evil destinies and lower realms." What is that one dharma? It is like this: thinking, 'What have I become, and how do I spend my days and nights?' Separately examining virtuous dharmas. Therefore, when examining one's own mindstream, the previous great masters said: "In this context of karma and its results, if it conforms to the Dharma, then it does not conform at all. We have made a mistake here, so there is no liberation at all. One must examine whether it conforms to karma and its results or not. If one examines one's own mindstream with the Dharma, and if one finds that it does not conform at all, and if one recognizes this from the depths of one's heart, then one is a wise person." As it is said in the Dhammapada: "The child who knows, 'I am a child,' is wise indeed." So it is said. If it conforms to the Dharma, it is like carrying a corpse, going in the opposite direction. If one still hopes to be the pinnacle of practitioners and sages, then one is the worst kind of fool. As it is said in the Dhammapada: "The child who thinks he is wise, is called a child." So it is said. In the end, one must also distinguish, analyze, and contemplate the Dharma. Potowa also quoted this passage from the Jataka Tales, believing that one must examine one's own mindstream. As it is said: "The distance between the sky and the earth is also long, the distance between the shore and the opposite shore of the ocean is also long, the distance between the eastern and western mountains is even longer, the distance between ordinary people and the sacred Dharma is even longer." So it is said. The two, ordinary people like us and the Dharma, are like these examples, with a great distance in between. This verse is a teaching about good speech that Bodhisattva Chandra exchanged for a thousand gold coins from a Brahmin. Stölungpa also said that if one examines with a certain thought, sometimes it will be like throwing a stone off a cliff, becoming more and more distant from the Dharma. After thinking in this way, the method of turning away from misdeeds is, as it is said in the chapter on the Truthful One: "O King, do not kill living beings, for all beings

Life is extremely precious. Therefore, whoever wishes to protect their lifespan for a long time should not even for a moment entertain the thought of taking life in their mind. As it is said. Regarding the ten non-virtuous actions and other faults mentioned earlier, do not even have the intention to commit them, and always rely on the mind of protection. Get used to it, do it many times. If you do not turn away from misdeeds in this way, you will have to experience suffering even if you do not want it, because you cannot escape no matter where you go. Therefore, actions that seem slightly pleasant in the short term, but when the fruit ripens, tears cover your face, and you have to endure them unwillingly, are not worth doing. When experiencing the ripening of karma, actions that allow you to enjoy joy and happiness without fault are worth doing. In the Compendium it says: You are afraid of suffering, and you do not like suffering, whether openly or secretly, do not do sinful deeds. If you have done sinful deeds, or are doing them, even if you run away in a panic, you will not be freed from suffering. Wherever you dwell, there is no place where karma cannot reach, not in the sky, not in the ocean, nor in the valleys of mountains. It also says: Those children with little wisdom treat themselves like enemies, creating sinful actions that will bring bitter results. Actions that cause suffering when done, with tears covering the face, weeping, and individually enduring the ripening of karma, are best not done. Actions that, when done, do not cause suffering, but bring joy and happiness to the mind, and individually enduring the ripening of karma, are best done. Because you want happiness for yourself, recklessly creating sinful actions, the ripening of those sinful actions will be experienced while weeping. It also says: Although sinful actions do not immediately cut like a sword, sinful actions will cause beings to appear in the next life. There, they individually experience the ripening of heat and torment, and sinful actions will make beings aware in the next life. Rust arises from iron, and the rust that arises corrodes the iron itself. Similarly, actions done without examination will, through one's own karma, lead to lower realms. Thus it is said. End of the small booklet.
