It is like suffering because of being excessively bound by being unable to repay debts. Furthermore, through five ways, even the light karmic results that ripen now will ripen in hell: those who are ignorant, those with small roots of virtue, those with heavy sins, those who have not repented, and those who initially do not practice virtue. Thus it is said. Therefore, it is said to be light for the wise who regret the former, keep vows for the latter, do not conceal sins, and practice the antidote of virtue. However, it is heavy for those who do not do these things, but knowingly engage in them with a contemptuous attitude, boasting as wise. In the Heap of Jewels Sutra, it is also said that all the sentient beings of the three thousand great thousand worlds enter the Mahayana, and each possesses the kingdom of a wheel-turning king, offering to the stupa of the Buddha with lamps filled with containers as vast as the ocean, with wicks as large as Mount Meru, is not even a hundredth part of the merit of a Bodhisattva who has arisen from a household, anointing the wick of a lamp with sesame oil, and holding it before a stupa. This shows that the intention is the mind of enlightenment, and there is no difference in the field, although the difference in objects is very great, it clearly shows the power of reliance. Through this reasoning, whether there are no vows or there are vows, and among those with vows, whether one possesses one, two, or three, meditating on the path with reliance, it is also clear that the latter is more superior than the former. For example, when a householder performs acts of generosity and so on, performing them while holding vows like the upasatha vows, and performing them without vows, the difference in the strength of the roots of virtue is very great. In the Sutra on Subduing the Morally Corrupt, it is said that a person who possesses the ten non-virtuous deeds, continuously accumulating sins for a hundred years without interruption, is less than a bhikshu who has broken his vows, covered with the banner of an ascetic, enjoying the offerings of faith for one day. This is also because the power of reliance makes sins more powerful. In the Vinaya-vibhanga, it is also said: It is better to eat a burning iron ball than to break vows and not guard them, enjoying the alms of the region. Here it is said to both breaking vows and relaxing the precepts. In the words of the precious Teacher, near the sin that relies on the Dharma, the sins of the ten non-virtuous deeds are insignificant.

It seems there is no falsehood in saying that. In terms of things, the greater power lies in: among the acts of giving to sentient beings, the giving of Dharma, and among the offerings to the Buddha, the offering of practice, which are far superior to material giving and offerings. Through these, one should also understand other aspects. In terms of intention, it is said that a Bodhisattva, with a mind inseparable from omniscience, discarding just a single flower accumulates more merit than if all the beings in the three thousand worlds each built a stupa as large as Mount Meru from piles of jewels, and attended to them in every way for hundreds of millions of kalpas. Similarly, the differences in intention regarding the excellence or inferiority of what is sought, and the intention for one's own and others' benefit, should be understood in terms of the intensity and duration of the intention. Regarding misdeeds, the stronger and longer the duration of the afflictive intention, the greater the power. Among these, anger is particularly powerful. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "Whatever merit, such as offerings and giving to the Sugatas, that has been accumulated over a thousand kalpas, all of that is destroyed by a single moment of anger." Thus it is. Furthermore, anger towards those who practice like Brahma, and especially towards Bodhisattvas, is particularly grave. As it is said in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "If one harbors harmful thoughts towards even a single being, neither morality nor learning can protect one from that. Neither meditation nor solitary places can protect one, neither giving nor offerings to the Buddhas can." And as it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "If one generates evil thoughts towards such a Bodhisattva benefactor, for as many kalpas as the number of evil thoughts generated, one will dwell in hell, so said the Sage." Thus it is. Third, regarding the results of these, there are three. Among them, the result of complete ripening is: each of the ten paths of action depends on the three root poisons of small, medium, and large degrees, thus there are three for each. Among them, each of the ten great paths of action, such as killing, leads to rebirth in hell; each of the ten medium paths of action leads to rebirth as a hungry ghost; and each of the ten small paths of action leads to rebirth as an animal. This is stated in the Basis of the Earth, while in the Sutra of the Ten Bhumis, the results of the small and medium are stated in reverse. The result that is concordant with the cause
