There are four ways to summarize and explain the doors of karma that possess power. Among them, the most powerful from the perspective of the field of merit are the Three Jewels, the Lama, those who are equal to the Lama, and parents, etc. Even if one does not have strong intentions towards these, and only does a small amount of benefit or harm, the merit and demerit will be great. This is as it is said in the Mindfulness Sutra. As it says: Even taking a small thing from the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha will become a great sin. If those things taken without permission from the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha are returned in proportion, then the sins of the Buddha and Dharma can be purified. However, stealing from the Sangha cannot be purified without experiencing the consequences, because the field of merit is very important. If what enters the mouth is food belonging to the Sangha, then that person will fall into the great hell of burning heat. If what enters the mouth is not food belonging to the Sangha, then that person will be born in the dark places of the Avici hell in between. It is said like this. In particular, if a person who has broken their vows uses the property of the Sangha, even if it is only a petal or a fruit, they will be born in the great hell of burning heat. Even after a hundred long years to be liberated, they will be reborn in desolate monasteries as animals without hands and feet, and as blind and handless hungry ghosts, experiencing many years of suffering, etc. This is what is said in the Sutra of the Essence of the Sun. Furthermore, it is said that it is not permissible to use for oneself flowers, etc., that have been offered to the Sangha and monks, or to give them to laypeople, or to allow laypeople to enjoy them, and the sin is also very great. In that very sutra it says: It is better to cut off one's own limbs with sharp razors, than to give to laypeople what has already been offered to the Sangha. It is better to swallow burning iron balls, than to enjoy the property of the Sangha. It is better to swallow flames like Mount Sumeru, than to allow laypeople to enjoy the property of the Sangha. It is better to be completely expelled and hung on a public stake, than to allow laypeople to enjoy the property of the Sangha. It is better to enter a room filled with flames, than to allow laypeople to spend the night in the residence of the Sangha.

One should not dwell in this either. (Thus it is said.) Among the Sangha, the individual who is a Bodhisattva is an extremely powerful field of merit and non-merit. In the Sutra of the Mudra Entering into Generating Faith, it says: Some people, being angry, imprison all sentient beings of the ten directions in a dark prison, but it is better to turn one's back on a Bodhisattva in anger and say, "I will not look at this wicked one." This will generate countless sins. Stealing all the possessions of all sentient beings of Jambudvipa is not as bad as slandering any Bodhisattva, as before. Destroying and burning stupas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River is not as bad as generating harmful thoughts and anger towards a Bodhisattva who is devoted to the Great Vehicle, and speaking unpleasant words, as before. In the Sutra of the Mudra Entering into Certainty and Uncertainty, it says: Gouging out the eyes of sentient beings of the ten directions, and then recreating the eyes with a mind of loving-kindness, and releasing the former sentient beings from prison and placing them in the bliss of a Chakravartin or Brahma, is not as good as looking at a Bodhisattva who is devoted to the Great Vehicle with joy, and wanting to look with joy, and praising him, which will generate countless merits. In the Sutra of the Miraculous Transformations of Perfect Tranquility, it also says: Taking the lives of all sentient beings of Jambudvipa, or stealing all their possessions, is not as bad as obstructing the merit of a Bodhisattva giving even a single mouthful of food to an animal, which will generate countless sins. Therefore, one must be extremely careful in this place. From the perspective of the support, the powerful one is: even a small lump of iron will sink to the bottom of the water, but the same iron made into a vessel, even if it is large, will float on top. Similarly, the sins committed by the unwise and the wise are said to be heavy and light. The reason for this is that in the Great Nirvana Sutra it says: An ignorant person is like a bee stuck in nasal mucus, unable to escape from it, and unable to escape from even a small fault, and because he has no remorse, he is unable to practice virtue. Because he conceals his faults, even if he has previous roots of virtue, they are defiled by sins. Therefore, he also transforms the cause of experiencing the ripening result in the present, and falls into a very heavy hell. It is like adding a handful of salt to a small amount of water, which makes it difficult to drink. Or someone else's deep well.
