The benefit of sentient beings is twofold: temporary higher rebirth and ultimate definite goodness. Among these, everything that is said starting from accomplishing temporary higher rebirth belongs to the category of the small person himself or the teachings common to the small person. The special small person is one who does not particularly focus on this life, but seeks the perfections of the heavens in future lives, and engages in accomplishing those causes, because it is said in the Lamp for the Path, "Whoever, by whatever means, seeks only the happiness of samsara for himself, that person is known to be inferior." Therefore, it is said. Definite goodness is twofold: liberation that is merely freedom from samsara, and the state of omniscience. Among these, everything that is said starting from the Hearer and Solitary Realizer vehicles belongs to the category of the intermediate person himself or the teachings common to the intermediate person. The intermediate person is one who generates weariness towards all of existence, makes liberation from existence his own goal, and engages in the path of its means—the three trainings, because it is said in the Lamp for the Path, "Turning his back on the pleasures of existence, by nature turning away from sinful deeds, seeking only his own peace, that person is called intermediate." Therefore, it is said. Jowo (Atiśa) said in the Abridged Lamp for the Path, "Because the guru Buddha said, 'Relying on mantra and pāramitā, I will accomplish enlightenment,' therefore, I will write that meaning here." As it is said, there are two means for accomplishing omniscience: the great vehicle of mantra and the great vehicle of pāramitā. These two belong to the category of the great person's teachings. The great person is one who, due to the power of great compassion, makes attaining Buddhahood his goal in order to exhaust all the suffering of sentient beings, and studies the six perfections and the two stages, etc., because it is said in the Lamp for the Path, "Whoever, by the suffering of taming himself, truly desires to completely eliminate all the suffering of others, that person is the most excellent." Thus it is said. The means by which that person accomplishes enlightenment, both pāramitā and mantra, will be discussed below.

Yir ro. The terminology of the three types of individuals is to determine and summarize. Furthermore, there are three types of individuals: those who are included neither in the Pratimoksha vows nor in those who are not included in the Pratimoksha vows, who possess the vows that are correctly taken; there are also those who possess the vows of the Hearer Vehicle, who correctly take the vows; and there are also those who possess the vows of the Bodhisattva, who correctly take the vows. Among them, the first is the lowest, the second is the intermediate, and the third is the highest. This saying has the same meaning as this. Furthermore, many ways of establishing the lowest, intermediate, and highest individuals are also mentioned. Like the "Lamp for the Path," in the "Commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge," Master Vasubandhu also spoke of the characteristics of the three types of individuals. The small individual has two types: those who value this life and those who value the next life, but here it is the second type, which is to take up entering the unerring means of higher rebirth. Second, the reason for guiding gradually through the path of the three types of individuals has two aspects: what is the meaning of guiding through the path of the three types of individuals, and the reason for guiding in that order. First, although the three types of individuals are spoken of in this way, in the stages of the path of the great individual, the paths of the other two types of individuals are also included without being incomplete, so those two are parts or limbs of the Mahayana path. As Master Ashvaghosa said in cultivating conventional Bodhicitta: Non-harming and truth, giving and then taking, and pure conduct, abandoning all clinging, this is the conduct of the happy realms. Having completely seen the suffering of samsara, cultivating the true path in order to abandon it, abandoning the two faults, this is the conduct of peace. All of these should be taken up, they are limbs of the path of definite emergence. Because of realizing the emptiness of all phenomena, a stream of compassion arises for beings, possessing limitless skillful means, this is the conduct of supreme definite emergence. Because it is said in this way. Therefore, here it is not guiding the path of the lowest individual who aims to attain only the happiness of existence, and the path of the intermediate individual who aims to attain only liberation from samsara for oneself, but the path that is common to those two.
