It is not in accordance with these. The three disciplines of practice are: Regarding the image of the Buddha, whether painted or not, no matter how good or bad, do not evaluate it, do not place it in a place of hardship, do not use it as collateral, and abandon all disrespectful behavior. Treat it as the field of veneration, just like the teacher. As it is said in the "Letter to a Friend": "Even if the image of the Sugata is made of wood, no matter how it is made, the wise should venerate it." The Vinayavibhaṅga says: Śeḍu Serkya said to the monks who were learning and not learning, "You elephant-headed one, what do you know about Dharma and non-Dharma?" Because he spoke eighteen different kinds of evil words like this, he was born as a crocodile fish with eighteen different heads. From the time of the teacher Light Protector to the time of the Shakya king, he lived in the animal realm. The Vinayavastu says: After the teacher Wheel-Turner passed away, King Beautiful Face had a great stupa built. A worker ridiculed, "Building such a great stupa, I don't know when it will be finished." He said this twice. Later, when it was completed, he regretted it and had a golden bell made with his wages and hung it on the stupa. As a result, he was born as Good Fame, who was ugly in appearance, small in body, and had a pleasant voice. Therefore, do not say of an image, "This is like this, and that is like that." Also, do not ridicule others for making images from good materials or for making large images, and do not do anything contrary to this. The great yogi offered an image of Manjushri to Jowo Rinpoche for viewing and asked, "Is this good or bad? If it is good, I will buy it with the four ounces of gold given by Rongpa Gargeba." Jowo Rinpoche said, "There is nothing bad about the image of the venerable Manjushri, but the craftsman is mediocre." Then he placed it on his head. It is said that he did the same for all the images that were made. For even something as short as four words of Dharma, abandon disrespectful behavior, such as cutting scriptures, using them as merchandise, placing them on bare ground or in places of hardship, carrying them with shoes, and stepping over them. Treat them with respect, just like the Dharma Jewel. Geshe

Previously, upon seeing the invited scriptures, one would stand up with palms joined. Later, when unable to stand, one would join palms. When Jowo (Atisha) went to Ngari (present-day Ngari Prefecture in Tibet, China), a mantra practitioner did not listen to his teachings, and a scribe smeared lime on the scriptures. When Jowo saw this, he couldn't help but say, "Alas, not good, not good." That mantra practitioner then developed faith and listened to the teachings. Sharawa also said, "We seem to be just playing with the Dharma. Disrespect for the Dharma and those who teach it is the cause of the decline of wisdom. This much ignorance is enough for now; do not accumulate the causes of ignorance. What could be worse than being more ignorant than this?" Monastics or ordained individuals, merely holding the signs of practitioners, should not be scolded or despised for their signs. Do not divide into factions based on "you and us" and view each other as enemies. Respect the Sangha as you would the Three Jewels. In "Encouraging Higher Intention," it says: Those who wish to attain merit and live in the forest, Should not examine the faults of others. Do not generate thoughts such as: "I am superior to others, I am the best." Pride is the root of all carelessness, Do not despise inferior monks. One will not attain liberation in one kalpa, This is the order in this teaching. Learn to treat Buddha statues and yogis' robes, even if they have yellow stains, as something not to be stepped on, but rather shaken off and placed in a clean place. The more respect you have for the Three Jewels, the more respect beings will have for you. As the Samadhiraja Sutra says: Whatever kind of action is done, One will obtain a result of that kind. There are six common trainings. Among them, remembering the differences and qualities of the Three Jewels and repeatedly taking refuge is: As previously explained, the difference between outsiders and insiders, as well as the differences within the Three Jewels themselves, and repeatedly contemplating their qualities. Remembering great kindness, always diligently making offerings, and offering even the essence of food and drink. As the Samadhiraja Sutra says: The Buddha obtains food through merit, But do not be unsatisfied like a child.
