You also do not see the teacher who is without faults of the land. Thus it is said. The distinction of the teachings is: The teachings of the Victorious One are that one obtains happiness as a result of the easy path, and that one turns away from the cycle of samsara, and that one completely purifies the afflictions, and that one does not deceive those who desire liberation, and that one is solely virtuous, and that one purifies misdeeds; while the teachings of the outsiders are the opposite of these. In the Special Praise it says: For what reason is your teaching, that one obtains happiness through happiness, for that reason, O Lion of Speech, do beings go to your treatises. And also, in the Praise Worthy of Praise it also says: Which is entering and turning away, and which is the complete purification of all afflictions? That itself, O Hero, is the distinction between your words and the words of others. This alone is the truth, that is merely a deceptive dharma, what other distinction is needed besides that between your words and the words of others? This alone is virtuous, that alone creates obstacles, what difference is there besides that between your words and the words of others? That which is stained and extremely stained by that, this will make it pure, that itself, O Protector, is the distinction between your words and the words of others. Thus it is said. By that, one can also know the distinction of the Sangha. There are two stages of what should be practiced after taking refuge: That which arises from the summary, and that which arises from the oral instructions. The first has two sets of four: The first set of four is relying on a noble individual: As previously explained, one relies on a noble spiritual friend, seeing him as the source of all qualities, taking refuge in the Buddha is taking refuge in the guide, and the practice that is in accordance with that is actually relying on the guide. Listening to the noble Dharma and properly attending to it: Listening to the Dharma, such as the sutras, spoken by the noble Buddha and the Buddha's Shravakas, as is appropriate, and whatever is attended to is the object that turns away the afflictions, that is attending to it, taking refuge in the Dharma is holding that one should manifest the Dharma of scripture and realization, and the practice that is in accordance with that is that. Practicing the Dharma in accordance with the Dharma: Practicing in accordance with the Dharma of Nirvana,

That is, taking refuge in the Sangha. Because taking refuge in the Sangha means taking those who proceed to Nirvana as friends. To practice in accordance with that is to learn in accordance with those who have entered for the sake of liberation. The second set of four, subduing the senses, is that after the senses have been freely indulged in objects, the mind follows them, and seeing the fault in indulging in objects, the mind is turned inward. Properly taking the basis of training is to take as much as possible the basis of training established by the Buddha. To have compassion for sentient beings, because the Victorious One's teachings are distinguished by compassion, therefore, taking refuge in them also means cherishing sentient beings and abandoning harm. To diligently make offerings to the Three Jewels from time to time is to make offerings to the Three Jewels every day. There are two types of instructions that arise from the oral tradition: individual and common instructions. The first has two parts: prohibitive instructions and affirmative instructions. The first is as stated in the Nirvana Sutra: "Whoever goes for refuge to the Three, is a truly excellent layperson; never goes for refuge to other gods. Going for refuge to the sacred Dharma, is free from the mind of harming and killing. Also going for refuge to the Sangha, is not associated with non-Buddhists." As it is said, not going for refuge to other gods, abandoning harming sentient beings, and not associating with non-Buddhists, these three. Among these, the first is that worldly gods such as Ishvara and Vishnu are not regarded as ultimate refuges, let alone the local deities and nagas who have become pretas. This is because it is not permissible to rely on them if one does not have faith in the Three Jewels. However, it is not impermissible to associate with them temporarily as helpers in some Dharma-abiding activities. For example, just as one relies on a patron for help with livelihood, or places hope in a doctor for healing. The second is to abandon harming and injuring sentient beings, such as beating, binding, imprisoning, piercing the nose, and loading beyond capacity, etc., to humans and animals, etc., with intention and action. The third is not having faith in the Three Jewels and slandering them.
