They are killed, beaten, and harmed by being controlled by (karma). They live together with gods and humans, and have no other dwelling place, as stated in the 'Actualities of the Earth.' In the commentary on the Abhidharmakośa, it says: Animals are those who travel in plains, water, and sky. The root of their dwelling is the great ocean, and the others are derived from it. Thus it is said. The 'Letter to a Friend' also says: Even in the birthplace of animals, there is killing, and various sufferings such as binding and beating. For those who have abandoned the virtuous deeds that lead to peace, one eats another, which is extremely unbearable. Some die for the sake of pearls, wool, bones, meat, and leather. Others, without power, are made to work after being struck with feet, hands, whips, and hooks. Thus it is said. Among these, the first verse shows the general suffering, and the second shows the particular suffering. The word 'etc.' in 'beating etc.' includes forced labor and piercing the nose etc. This refers to humans and non-humans controlling the acts of killing etc. 'One eats another' refers to the harm among animals of the same species. The virtuous deed that leads to peace is the virtuous deed of attaining nirvana. Abandoning it shows that they are extremely foolish and unsuitable as vessels for the path. The five from being made to work by being kicked with feet to being made to work by being struck with hooks are, in order, horses, buffaloes, donkeys, elephants, and cows etc. These are as they appear in the commentary on the 'Letter to a Friend.' Furthermore, they are born in darkness and water, and grow old and die in them, and are exhausted by heavy burdens, plowing, shearing wool, being chased, and being tormented by various different ways of killing. They are killed, tormented by hunger and thirst and sun and rain, and are harassed by hunters from many sides, so they are always filled with fear. One should think about these painful situations, and thereby feel weary and discouraged. The measure of lifespan: In the Abhidharmakośa, it says: Animals etc., the longest is a kalpa. This means that those with long lifespans can live for about a kalpa, and those with short lifespans are uncertain. Thinking about the suffering of pretas: Those who are particularly attached to miserliness are reborn as pretas. They suffer from hunger and thirst, their skin, flesh, and blood are all dried up, like a burnt tree stump, and their faces are haggard.

covered, the mouth is extremely dry and licked with the tongue. There are three aspects to this. The external obscurations to food and drink are: when they flow in springs, lakes and small lakes, there are beings holding swords, spears and short spears who prevent access to the springs and so on, and the water is also seen as pus and blood and is not desired to be drunk. The internal obscurations to food and drink are: having a mouth the size of a needle's eye, having a burning mouth, having goiters, and having a large belly, even if no one else obstructs them, even if they have found food and drink, they are unable to eat and drink. The obscurations to food and drink are: those called "flames of fire," everything eaten and drunk burns into flames and is scorched, and those called "filth eaters" can only eat and drink impure things such as feces and urine, which smell foul, are harmful, and are only able to be eaten and drunk with condemnation. Some cut off their own flesh and eat it, and are unable to use clean and good food and drink. Their place is: In the Commentary on the Treasury, it says, "The king of the pretas is Yama." The root of their place is from the royal palace, five hundred yojanas below this Jambudvipa (Earth), and the others are derived from that. As it is said in the Letter to a Friend: "Even among the pretas, due to the lack of desire, the suffering that arises is constant and incurable, the suffering caused by hunger, thirst, cold, heat, fatigue and fear is extremely unbearable. Some have mouths the size of a needle's eye, and bellies as large as mountains, tormented by hunger, and do not have the power to enjoy even a little bit of discarded impurity. Some have skin and bones, naked, like the top of a dried-up palm tree. Some are branded and burning from the mouth, and the food falls into their mouths as flames. Some races cannot even find pus and feces, blood and other impurities, they fight each other face to face, and the goiters that grow from their throats can only eat the ripened pus. For the pretas, the moon is hot in the summer, and the sun is cold in the winter. These trees without fruit, just by looking at them, can dry up the rivers." And so on. Of these, the first verse is general, and the remaining verses are specific.
