Even boneless, it is struck by hail, the body stiffens, trembles, hunches, and cowers. Hundreds of blisters arise, and from the ruptures, creatures are born that devour and gnaw, Gnawing at fat, pus, and blood, with bones connected and teeth clenched. Hair and fur are disheveled and scattered, eyes, ears, and armpits are harmed and afflicted, The space between body and mind is extremely obscured, dwelling in the cold hell, crying out in extreme agony. Thus it is said. How long are these sufferings experienced? Until the evil karma is exhausted. Furthermore, in the "Substance of Matters" it is said: The lifespan of beings born in the cold hells should be understood as being half that of beings born in the great hells, each succeeding one being half of the previous one. Thus it is said. Moreover, in the "Explanation of the Treasury," a sutra is quoted: "Monks! For example, here in the land of Magadha, there is a container of eighty kharisas (an ancient Indian unit of volume) of sesame seeds, filled to the brim with sesame seeds. Then, if someone were to pass by every hundred years and remove one sesame seed, monks! In that way, the eighty kharisas of sesame seeds from the land of Magadha would be exhausted very quickly, but I do not say that the lifespan of beings born in the Blister Hell would come to an end. Monks! Twenty Blister Hells are like one Bursting Blister Hell." And so on, extensively. Furthermore, monks! Twenty Lotus-Cracking Hells are like one Great Lotus-Cracking Hell. Thus it is said, experiencing such a lifespan. The Neighborhood Hells are those that exist near the hot and cold hells, and the "Substance of Matters" says that they also exist in the human realm. Also, the "Root of the Vinaya" says that they dwell near the shores of great lakes, as it appears in the biography of the monk Geden Sung. In the "Explanation of the Treasury," it is also said: "The sixteen sentient being hells are those that are manifested by the karma of all sentient beings. The Neighborhood Hells are those that are manifested by the individual karma of many, two, or one. The distinctions of their forms are various. The location is not fixed, because they exist in the direction of rivers, mountains, and wildernesses, and also below." Thus it is said.

Oṃ. Thus, the cause of being born in those places, as will be explained below, is very easy to occur, so many are accumulated every single day. And there are still countless ones that have been accumulated in the past. It is not appropriate to remain at ease, but to think about these and be afraid. Because between those and us, there is only the cessation of the movement of breath. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: Having done the deeds of hell, why do you remain so comfortable? And as it is said in the Suhrllekha: The interval between the breaths of a sinner is separated by the sufferings of hell. Having heard of the immeasurable sufferings, what is it that you are not afraid of, the nature of a vajra? Seeing and hearing the paintings of hell, remembering, reading, and shaping them, even these will generate fear, what need is there to mention those who experience the unbearable ripening? Thus it is said. Among the sufferings of samsara, the sufferings of the lower realms are difficult to bear, and among them, the sufferings of hell are unbearable. The suffering of being pierced continuously by three hundred sharp spears in a single day cannot even be compared to a fraction of the smallest suffering of hell. Among the hells, the suffering of Avīci is the greatest. As it is said in the Suhrllekha: Among all pleasures, the extinction of craving, is the master of bliss. Likewise, among all sufferings, the suffering of Avīci hell is most unbearable. Here, the suffering of being fiercely stabbed by three hundred short spears in a single day, even a small suffering of hell does not bear even a fraction of it. Thus it is said. The cause of generating such suffering, know that it is only the misdeeds of your own three doors. Even the smallest misdeed should be avoided, and one should strive with whatever skill one has as a person. As it is said in that very text: The seeds of these non-virtuous results are the misdeeds of body, speech, and mind. You should strive with all your might so that not even a speck of them arises. Thus it is said. Thinking about the suffering of animals: Animals, the powerful ones kill the small ones, become tools for gods and humans, and do not have autonomy.
