Furthermore, the lifespan of the desire realm gods is the same as the days and nights (of the hells). Therefore, the lifespan of those (hell beings) is the same as the desire realm gods. Half of the extremely hot hell is the intermediate kalpa of the Avici hell. Thus it is said, and it is the same in the actual ground. The neighboring hells are: each of the eight great hells has four walls and four gates. Outside of these (hells), there is an iron fence surrounding them, and the fence also has four gates. At each of those gates, there are four additional sentient being hells: a pit of embers, a swamp of decaying corpses or a feces swamp that smells like rotting corpses, a path of razors, and an impassable river. The first of these is: the ember pit is about knee-deep. When those sentient beings go to seek shelter, when they place their feet there, all their skin, flesh, and blood are destroyed. When they lift their feet, they grow back again. The second is: adjacent to it is a feces swamp that smells like rotting corpses. When those sentient beings seeking shelter cross it, they fall and sink, headfirst. In that swamp, there is a worm called a sharp-beaked worm, which pierces the skin, flesh, tendons, and bones, digging down to the marrow. The third is: adjacent to the swamp is a path filled with razor blades. When those sentient beings seeking shelter go there and place their feet, all their skin, flesh, and blood are cut off, and when they lift their feet, they grow back again. Adjacent to it is a forest of sword-leaf trees. When those sentient beings seeking shelter go there and rely on and sit in its shade, swords fall from the trees. They pierce and cut off limbs and branches. When they fall there, wild dogs come and tear and devour them from behind. Adjacent to it is a grove of iron silk-cotton trees. When those sentient beings seeking shelter go there, they are forced to climb it. When they climb up, the thorns point downwards. When they come down, the thorns point upwards, and they pierce and cut off limbs and branches. There is a bird there called an iron-beaked crow, which sits on their shoulders or heads and pecks out and devours their eyeballs. These are like the harm of falling weapons, so they are considered as one. The fourth is: adjacent to the silk-cotton tree

When the ground is formed, there is a place called 'Immeasurable River,' which is filled with boiling molten water. There, sentient beings seeking a place to dwell fall into it, going up and down and being boiled, just like beans and other things are put into a copper pot filled with water with a great fire lit beneath it. On both banks of that river, some beings sit holding sticks, nets, and fishing nets, not letting them come out. If they are pulled out with a net or fishing net, they are laid on their backs on the great burning ground and asked what they want. They say, 'We know nothing and see nothing, but we are hungry and thirsty.' Then, burning iron tongs are put into their mouths, and boiling copper water is poured into their mouths. Those are also arranged like the ground, and for both the near and the temporary, it is said that there is no definite lifespan. However, as long as the karmic power of experiencing those sufferings is not exhausted, they will experience suffering for a long time in those places. The eight cold hells are: beyond each of the eight great sentient hells, each separated by ten thousand krosa. Thirty-two thousand krosa below this is the Blister Hell, and from there, every two thousand krosa, there are the other seven. Among them, the Blister Hell is: being struck by a great wind, the whole body swells up as if blisters have formed. The characteristic of blisters bursting is: swelling up as if blisters are bursting. Sothamtampa, Kyihud, and Achu are called: named according to the way they are pronounced. Splitting like an উৎপལ་ utpala lotus is: being struck by a great wind, the color turns blue, and it splits into five or six petals. The characteristic of splitting like a lotus is: the color changes from blue to red, and it splits into ten petals or more. The characteristic of splitting like a great lotus is: the skin becomes very red, and it splits into a hundred petals or more. Their order, the size of the places, and the sufferings are all like the ground. In the Jataka it is said: 'Not seeing the next life, dwelling there, dark cold winds rise, therefore causing diseases that destroy the bones, who would enter there to benefit me?' Thus it is said to dwell in darkness. In the 'Letter of Instruction' it is also said: an example of a cold wind
