One should contemplate how to become a refuge, protector, and companion. As it is said in the letter of Kanika: 'By the ripening of past actions, you have been completely abandoned, connected with new actions, and when led by the Lord of Death, all beings will return except for virtue and non-virtue, and no one will follow you. Know this and act well.' So it is said. Shri Jagatamitra also said: 'However the gods may come to you, once you depart and go to another world, like a lone, childless wife defeated by enemies in a desolate plain, there are no clothes, no friends, no kingdom, no bed. Although you possess immeasurable power and armies, no one sees you, no one hears you. Only a single rope, and no one to follow. In short, even your name will not exist at that time, what need to mention anything else?' So it is said. Thus, having contemplated the preciousness and meaningfulness of leisure and endowment, and the remembrance of death, which is difficult to obtain yet easily destroyed, if one does not strive for lasting happiness in future lives and beyond, then animals are better than humans at achieving happiness and eliminating suffering during their lifetime. Therefore, one needs a practice that surpasses them. Otherwise, even if one obtains a basis for fortunate rebirth, it is as if one has not obtained it. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: 'Even animals can accomplish what is difficult for humans. For the sake of that insignificant thing, the precious leisure and endowment, which is difficult to obtain, is destroyed by those tormented by karma.' So it is said. Therefore, even though a rare birth has occurred, one must strive because it is the basis of the path. Potowa said: 'Our method of eliminating appearances is to meditate on impermanence, eliminating all appearances of this life, such as relatives and possessions, knowing that one will go alone, without a second, to the next life, thinking that one must not do anything non-Dharmic, and thus not being attached to this life. Until this thought arises in the mind, the path of all Dharmas is blocked.' Dolpa also said: 'While accumulating merit and purifying obscurations, pray to the deities and gurus, and contemplate earnestly with bones and wood. Even thinking that one will not be born for a hundred years, conditioned phenomena will not stay there, so what else can one do?'

It is said that it arises in that way. When asked to transfer to Kāmarūpa, he said to repeat the previous one. If asked to continue, he said, "Continue, don't stop." Therefore, if the mind is capable, meditate as previously stated. If the mind is not capable, then grasp one of the ways in which the three roots and nine reasons are compatible. Just as ornaments are put on a person being led to the slaughterhouse, one should repeatedly meditate until one is weary of the affairs of this life. The topics of relying on a spiritual friend, leisure and endowment, and impermanence, wherever they are in the scriptures and their commentaries, should be understood as the practice for that time and place, and if one can protect them, one will easily attain the intentions of the Buddhas, and one should understand them in that way at other times as well. Second, thinking about how the next life will be, and the happiness and suffering of the two types of beings: Since it is certain that death comes so quickly, there is no time to stay in this life. After death, it is not that there is nothing, one must take rebirth without leaving. Moreover, since there is no place to be born other than in the two realms of beings, one will be born in either the happy or unhappy realms. Since there is no autonomy in being born in those realms, but rather one is subject to the power of karma, one will be born according to how one is drawn by white or black karma. Thus, if I am born in the lower realms, what will I become? One should think about the suffering of the lower realms. Lord Nagarjuna said: "The hells, intensely hot and cold, Remember as a single day like a hundred years. The hungry ghosts, emaciated by hunger and thirst, Should also be remembered. The animals, with their vast suffering of ignorance, Should be observed and remembered. Abandon the causes of those, and practice the causes of happiness. The human body of Jambudvipa is difficult to obtain, When you have obtained it, at the time of the causes of the lower realms, Strive diligently to cut them off." Therefore, in general, meditating on the suffering of samsara and especially the suffering of the lower realms is extremely important. Like this, if one thinks about oneself falling into an ocean of suffering, then aversion will eliminate pride and arrogance; seeing suffering as the result of non-virtue, one will be extremely cautious in avoiding sin; because one does not want suffering, one desires happiness, and seeing happiness as the result of virtue, one will be happy to practice virtue; based on one's own experience, compassion will arise for others; and from samsara

Now, generating the aspiration for liberation, taking refuge intensely out of fear of suffering, and so forth, are all-encompassing summaries that gather together many key points of practice. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "Without suffering, there is no renunciation, therefore, make your mind steadfast." And also: "The qualities of suffering are that they eliminate pride through sorrow, generate compassion for those in samsara, are ashamed of evil, and delight in virtue." And also: "I, terrified by fear, offer myself to Samantabhadra." As it is said. These qualities of suffering are spoken of in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara in terms of the suffering that arises in one's own being. However, it is the same for those who will experience suffering. Thus, there are three aspects to contemplating the suffering of the lower realms: contemplating the suffering of the hells, animals, and hungry ghosts. The first has four: the great hells of sentient beings, the neighboring hells, the cold hells, and the occasional hells. The first is: thirty-two thousand yojanas below this is the Reviving Hell, and from there, separated by four thousand yojanas each, are seven others. Thus, of the eight, in the first, the Reviving Hell, those sentient beings gather together and, due to the power of karma, various weapons arise in succession, with which they strike one another. Then they faint and fall to the ground, and a voice comes from the sky: May you be revived! Then they rise again and strike each other as before, experiencing immeasurable suffering. In the Black Line Hell, those born there are measured by the hell guards with black lines in various shapes, such as four corners, eight corners, or like raindrops, and then, as the lines are drawn, they are cut and chopped with weapons, experiencing suffering. In the Crushing Hell, when those sentient beings gather together, the hell guards squeeze them between two iron mountains that look like cliffs. Then, immediately, they are crushed by the two mountains, and at that time, torrents of blood flow from all the pores. Similarly, there are faces like those of sheep, horses, elephants, lions, and tigers.
