If one thinks or even thinks that one might die today, one will strive for the sake of the next life, where one will go, and will not prepare to stay in this life. If that thought does not arise, one will see oneself staying in this life, and thus prepare for it, without striving for the sake of the next life. For example, if one thinks of staying in one place for a long time, one will prepare to stay there; if one thinks of not staying there but going elsewhere, one will prepare for where to go. Therefore, one must generate the thought of dying every day. There are three points to this. Thinking about the uncertainty of the lifespan of the people of Jambudvipa (the southern continent): Generally, the lifespan of those with unpleasant voices is certain. Although others are not certain to live out their lifespan, most are certain. But the lifespan of the people of Jambudvipa (the southern continent) is very uncertain. First, there have been those with immeasurable lifespans, and now one must prepare for the afterlife at the age of ten. And now it seems uncertain who will die, whether old, young, or middle-aged. As it says in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Here, uncertain until the end, ten years the first immeasurable years." And as it says in the Collection Sutra: "Many people are seen in the morning, some are not seen in the afternoon. Many people are seen in the afternoon, some are not seen in the morning." And "Many men and women, and those in their prime, will die, so saying this person is young, what certainty is there in being alive? Some will die in the womb, likewise, some will die at birth, likewise, some will die while toddling, likewise, some will die while running around. Some are old, some are young, some are in their prime, gradually they will all die, like ripe fruit falling." Thus it is said. For teachers or friends, etc., who have not reached the end of their lives, but have died suddenly due to internal and external causes of death, without fulfilling their wishes, remember those situations. And repeatedly think that you are certainly of that nature, thus generating the thought of death. Thinking that the causes of death are very many and the causes of survival are few: This life has many harms from sentient and non-sentient beings. For example, humans and non-humans who have become classes of demons will harm in various ways, and many animals will harm the body and life, all of which
