And all the trees and the trunks, branches, and leaves of the trees, and all sentient beings and creatures, are ground into powder and come. It is not easy to escape from this by running quickly, or to resist it with strength, or to resist it with wealth, or to resist it with objects, mantras, and medicines. Great King, similarly, these four great fears will come. It is not easy to escape from these by running quickly, or to resist them with strength, or to resist them with wealth, or to resist them with objects, mantras, and medicines. What are the four? They are old age, sickness, death, and decay. Great King, old age destroys youth and comes, sickness destroys health and comes, decay destroys all perfections and comes, and death destroys life and comes. It is not easy to escape from these by running quickly, or to resist them with strength, or to resist them with wealth, or to pacify them with objects, mantras, and medicines. Thus it is said. Karmapa said: Now it is necessary to fear death, it is necessary not to fear at the time of death, but we are just the opposite, we do not fear now, but at the time of death we will scratch our chests. Thinking that there is no increase in life, only decrease, and that it is continuous, it is like from the time of entering the womb, if we protect ourselves well and happily now, then today we can live to be a hundred years old or a little more. Just as it is said, that is the longest it can be. Even if we can live that long, the consumption of life during that time is very rapid. The year is consumed by the passing of months, the month is consumed by the passing of days, and the day is consumed by the passing of day and night. These are also consumed by the passing of morning and so on, so the total amount of life is short, and much of it has already been consumed, and there is not even a moment of increase in the remaining life, only decrease, day and night are constantly going on, therefore, it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: 'Day and night without stopping, this life is constantly decreasing, and there is no remainder to add, how can I not die?' That is the reason. We should also think about this from many metaphors, such as when weaving cloth, only one weft thread can be passed through at a time, but it can be woven quickly, and when sheep and other animals to be slaughtered are led to be slaughtered, each step brings them closer to death.

Like dew, like a rushing river, or like a waterfall cascading from a steep cliff, life quickly runs out and goes. Just as a shepherd holds a stick and drives the livestock back to their own dwellings without any freedom, old age and sickness involuntarily lead us to the Lord of Death. One should practice these truths from many aspects. As it says in the Compendium: Just as a loom is stretched out, and wherever the shuttle is inserted, the shuttle will reach the bottom, so too is the life of people. Just as someone destined to be killed, with every step they take, approaches the place of being killed, so too is the life of people. The flow of a rushing river, just as it cannot be reversed, so too the life of people flows and cannot return again. Short and full of suffering, and quickly perishing, like writing in water with a stick. Just as a shepherd holds a stick and drives the livestock back to their dwellings, so too old age and sickness lead people to the Lord of Death. Thus it is said. Atisha also went to the water's edge to practice impermanence, saying, "How good it is that this water is dripping away!" and practiced. In the Extensive Play Sutra, it also says: The three realms are impermanent like autumn clouds, the birth and death of beings are like watching a dance, the life of beings flows like lightning in the sky, flowing quickly like a waterfall on a cliff. It is explained through various metaphors. Therefore, if there is even a little room for thought in the mind, as it is said, all external things are showing impermanence. So, one should combine various things to think about, and repeated contemplation will generate certainty. It is useless to just think a little and say it has no effect. Karmapa said: Saying that thinking has no effect, when have you ever thought? You wander around during the day and sleep at night, and you're lying! Thus it is said. At the end of life, not only will one be destroyed by the Lord of Death and go to the next life, but also during that time, whether walking, standing, or lying down, no matter what one does, life is decreasing, and there is no time when it is not decreasing. Starting from entering the womb, without stopping even for a moment, one is always facing the next life and going. Therefore, even the intermediate existence
