Cutting off the lifeblood of higher rebirth and definite goodness, in the terrible, harsh, hot, and unpleasant places of the lower realms, being approached by death and led by evil karma, what other gate is more terrible than that? The Four Hundred Verses also say: "Whoever possesses the three realms, and is not himself the lord of death, if he sleeps soundly, what is more terrible than that?" So it is said. The Bodhisattvacharyavatara also says: "Everything must be abandoned and left behind, but I did not understand this, and for the sake of friends and enemies, I committed various sins." So it is said. Secondly, the benefits of meditation are: If a genuine mind of mindfulness of death arises, for example, if it is certain that one will die today or tomorrow, even if one has only a little understanding of the Dharma, one will see that one cannot associate with relatives and possessions, etc., and thus aversion will arise towards them, and just as the desire to take the essence through giving, etc., arises naturally, all efforts made for the sake of worldly concerns such as gain, respect, and fame, etc., will be seen as meaningless like winnowing chaff, and as a place of deception, thus turning away from evil deeds, and with constant and respectful diligence, one will accumulate virtuous deeds such as taking refuge and keeping vows, etc., thus taking the supreme essence from meaningless things such as the body, thus elevating oneself to a supreme position, and also leading beings there, so what is more important than that? Therefore, it is also praised by many metaphors. The Mahaparinirvana Sutra says: "Among all fields, the autumn harvest is the best. Among all footprints, the footprint of the ox is the best. Among all thoughts, the thought of impermanence and death is the best, because these eliminate all desire, ignorance, and pride of the three realms." So it is said. Similarly, it is also praised as a hammer that immediately destroys all afflictions and evil deeds, and as a great door that immediately enters into the accomplishment of all goodness, etc. The Compendium also says: "This body should be understood as a pottery vessel, and thus all phenomena should be known as illusions, here cutting off the flowered arrows of Mara, conquering the Lord of Death."

Just like (the Lord of Death) binds with a rope, people have no way but to leave. As it is said (in the scriptures): After seeing old age, and the suffering of disease, and death, which is the separation of consciousness, (Shakyamuni) with firm conviction abandoned the home that was like a prison, who among ordinary worldly people can abandon desires like him? In short, the time to accomplish the meaning of a great person is only when one obtains this excellent basis of leisure and endowment. Most of us dwell in the lower realms, and even if we occasionally come to the higher realms, we are mostly in places without leisure, so there is no opportunity to practice the Dharma in those places. Even if we obtain a basis that is sufficient for practice, not practicing the Dharma properly is because we still think we will not die. Therefore, clinging to the side of not dying is the door to all decline; and its antidote—remembering death—is the door to all perfections. Therefore, for such people, do not think that this is the practice of those who have no other profound Dharma to practice, or think that even if you want to practice, you should first practice a little, and it is not suitable as a long-term practice, but you should cultivate certainty from the depths of your heart about the necessity of remembering death in the beginning, middle, and end, and practice it. Third, what kind of mind should be generated when remembering death? Because of strong attachment to relatives and so on, fear arises from the fear of being separated from them, this is the way people who have not practiced the path fear death, so this is not what is to be generated here. So, what kind of fear should be generated? Because all the bodies taken under the influence of karma and afflictions are inevitably not exempt from death, so even if you generate fear of death, you cannot prevent it for the time being. However, one should fear death if one has not worked for the benefit of the next life, that is, preventing the cause of bad migrations, and has not accumulated the causes of higher realms and definite goodness. Because if you think of fearing these, you can accumulate these causes, so that you can not be afraid at the time of death. If you do not accumulate these causes, then in general you will not be able to escape from samsara, and in particular you will fall into the lower realms, so you will be tormented by regret at the time of death because of fear. As it is said in the Jataka Tales: Even if you try your best, you cannot stay, what is the use of being afraid and cowardly about what cannot be remedied? Thus, observing the nature of the world, people regret doing evil, doing good
