Should be relied upon. Therefore, just like not falling asleep, one should repeatedly follow these dharmas with the mind. In short, even during sleep, one should cultivate virtue. Mindfulness is: When relying on mindfulness in this way, if any affliction arises, one should know it, not accept it, and abandon it. The thought of awakening has three aspects. The first is: In every way, one should not let the mind be overwhelmed by sleep, but like a wild animal, one should lie on one's side with a mind seized by diligence. In this way, sleep will not be deep, and one will be able to awaken at the time of awakening. The second is: Thinking, "Alas! I should accomplish all the non-sleeping that the Buddha has permitted," in order to accomplish it, one should generate aspiration with great effort. In this way, one can sleep like the lion's posture permitted by the Buddha, without excess or deficiency. The third is: Thinking, "Just as I do not sleep today and diligently accomplish virtuous dharmas, so too I will do so tomorrow." In this way, the aspiration for virtue will not be interrupted, and even if forgotten, one will strive to accomplish it from above. If the conduct of eating and sleeping is without fault and practiced meaningfully, then many instances of wasting time will be avoided. Therefore, the noble Asanga quoted the scriptures and explained them as they were determined. In this way, apart from the uncommon methods of practice during the main session, how to act during the preliminary, main session, conclusion, and breaks should be applied to all objects of shamatha and vipashyana that are cultivated from now on. How to act during breaks has been explained. Second, refuting wrong ideas about the method of practice: Those who do not turn the great treatises, including the scriptures and their commentaries, into pith instructions say: When meditating on the path, one should not repeatedly examine the object, but should only practice abiding meditation, because repeatedly examining with the wisdom of individual analysis is only done during the time of listening and thinking, and conceptual thoughts are grasping at characteristics, therefore they will hinder enlightenment. This is complete nonsense from someone who has not understood the key points of practice.

Oh yes. The Ornament of the Sutras states: "Here, first, relying on hearing, proper attention arises. From familiarity with proper attention, correct knowledge of the object arises." Therefore, from properly attending to the meaning of what is heard through the wisdom arising from reflection, the wisdom arising from meditation that directly realizes the true meaning arises. Therefore, one must first listen to what needs to be practiced from others and ascertain it through the power of others. Then, one must properly contemplate the meaning of what is heard through scripture and reasoning, and ascertain it through one's own power. Thus, having ascertained through hearing and thinking, and being free from doubt, repeatedly familiarizing oneself with it is called meditation. Therefore, both analytical meditation, which repeatedly examines, and stabilizing meditation, which does not examine, are necessary. Because there is both settling without examining what has been ascertained through hearing and thinking, and meditating by examining through individual discriminating awareness. Therefore, to think that all meditation is stabilizing meditation is like holding a single barley grain and saying that all grains are this one. Moreover, just as hearing must precede the wisdom arising from hearing, and thinking must precede the wisdom arising from thinking, so too must meditation precede the wisdom arising from meditation, because wisdom arises from meditation. Having done so, the meditation that precedes the wisdom arising from meditation is the familiarization with what has been ascertained by the wisdom arising from thinking. Therefore, it is said that the wisdom arising from meditation arises from the wisdom arising from thinking. Therefore, the more one hears, the more wisdom arises from it, and the more wisdom there is, the more thinking there is. The more thinking there is, the more wisdom arises from it, and the more wisdom there is, the more one practices through meditation. The more one practices, the more ways there are to prevent faults and accomplish qualities. Therefore, the scriptures and their commentaries say that hearing and thinking are very important for meditation. If what has been ascertained through hearing and thinking is not for the sake of meditation, but only for the sake of cutting off external expanse, or if one meditates on something unrelated to it, it is like pointing to one place and running to another. In this way, what is said becomes irrelevant, and wisdom...
