"I composed this for the sake of meditation." As it is said in those two scriptures, all the stages of the path are said to be meditation. Also, the Compendium of Trainings says: "Therefore, body, enjoyment, and merit should be constantly and uninterruptedly given, protected, purified, and increased as appropriate." Thus, each of the three—body, enjoyment, and roots of virtue—should be given, protected, purified, and increased in four ways. Since all of this is said to be meditation, the term meditation should not be taken as something small. Furthermore, since all thoughts are considered to be grasping at characteristics and are regarded as obstacles to attaining enlightenment, this inferior wrong conception of abandoning all meditations that involve individual analysis is the doctrine of the Chinese master Hwa Shang. The refutation of this will be discussed in the context of calm abiding and insight. This wrong conception also creates obstacles to generating great respect for the great scriptures, because the meaning of those scriptures mostly appears to require individual analysis and investigation, but the investigated phenomena are seen as unnecessary during practice. This is also a major cause of the decline of the teachings, because the scriptures and great commentaries are seen as not becoming pith instructions and are therefore not respected. Thus, if there are two types of meditation on the path—meditation with analysis and meditation without analysis—which paths are analytical meditation and which are settling meditation? It will be explained. For example, meditating on faith in the spiritual friend, the preciousness and meaningfulness of leisure and endowment, impermanence and death, karma and its effects, the faults of samsara, and the mind of enlightenment requires analytical meditation. In this way, a strong and lasting conviction is needed for these, because without it, the opposite of these, such as disrespect, cannot be prevented, and generating such a mind depends solely on repeatedly analyzing and meditating with individual analysis. For example, just as strong desire arises when many attractive characteristics are attributed to an object of attachment, and strong hatred arises when many unpleasant characteristics are contemplated about an enemy. Therefore, when meditating on these paths, it does not matter whether the appearance of the object is clear or unclear, but the mind's grasping must be strong and lasting, so analytical meditation should be done. The mind abiding on a single object

Unable to abide, if one abides at will on a single object, one can be competent. In the case of cultivating tranquility and insight, if one repeatedly examines, the mind cannot abide, therefore one must engage in abiding meditation. This will be discussed in the chapter on tranquility and insight. If one does not understand this method, and says that if one is a wise person, one should only engage in analytical meditation, and if one is a mediocre person, one should only engage in abiding meditation, this is also incorrect, because everyone must do both. Wise people must also cultivate tranquility and insight, and mediocre people must also cultivate strong faith in spiritual friends, etc. Both of these methods of cultivation, in both the Sutra and Tantra sections, say that one must cultivate through the method of separate observation, and there are very many. If there is no or little of this cultivation, the life force of the path, the stainless wisdom, will not arise, and even if it arises slightly, the wisdom will not increase, therefore there will be no progress on the path. The ultimate goal of the path is: Like omniscience in wisdom. As the Makhol school said, it lies in distinguishing all suchness and all, the wisdom that does not confuse. Therefore, if the more one cultivates the path, the more severe the forgetfulness becomes, the more dull the memory becomes, and the more dull the mind becomes in distinguishing what to take and what to abandon, then one should clearly know that this is a sign of going astray. Furthermore, if one understands the many different qualities of the Three Jewels, etc., and thereby one's faith in them greatly increases, and one thoroughly understands the many faults of samsara, thereby generating renunciation and weariness, and one sees the benefits of liberation from many angles, thereby generating a strong pursuit. And thoroughly understand the Bodhicitta and the six perfections, etc. The wonderful actions, and thereby generate irreversible faith, desire, and diligence towards them, all of these depend on studying the meaning of the scriptures through the wisdom of separate observation and cultivating them, therefore, those with intelligence should generate a definite understanding of this method that others cannot transfer. Those who have very little understanding of the method of cultivation say: If one does too much research through separate observation, it will become an obstacle to the samadhi of one-pointedness on a single object.
