Food is digested in the middle or last part of the night, producing flesh and blood, etc. Some become feces and urine, staying in the lower part of the body, and they must be removed every day, thinking that relying on food will cause many kinds of diseases. There are five faults arising from seeking food. The fault arising from striving is: for the sake of food and the source of food, enduring the dangers of heat and cold, making many efforts to obtain it, and if it is not successful, suffering from sorrow, etc., and even if it is successful, suffering from the intense effort of guarding it for fear of being robbed and wasted. The breaking of friendship is: for this reason, fathers and sons also argue and fight with each other. Not knowing satisfaction is: for this, desire becomes greater and greater, and kings, etc., fight each other and suffer many sufferings. The fault of not having autonomy is: those who eat the food of others, when fighting with others for the sake of the master, suffer many sufferings. The fault arising from wrong use is: for the sake of food and the source of food, accumulating the sins of body, speech, and mind, and at the time of death, remembering these, dying with regret, and after death, falling into evil destinies. Even so, there are some benefits, namely that the body can exist by relying on food. One should not rely on food just for this reason, but one should rely on the existence of the body, and I should properly practice pure conduct. Donors and patrons squeeze skin, flesh, and blood, wanting special rewards and giving alms, thinking that what those people have done will also become a great fruit, and then enjoy it. In the Compendium of Trainings, one should remember the idea of bestowing favors on the donor, and that the worms of the body are now gathered with material things, and in the future will be gathered with the Dharma. And the idea of eating in order to accomplish the benefit of all sentient beings. It is also said in the Letter to a Friend: Food is like medicine, to be taken with wisdom, without attachment or hatred, not for fatness, not for pride, not for beauty, but only for the sake of maintaining the body. Thus it is said. How should one practice yoga diligently without sleeping, and what should one do when sleeping? It is said in the Letter to a Friend: A person with intelligence should spend the whole day, and also after the first and last parts of the night have passed, and when sleeping...

Not becoming childless, one should dwell mindfully among them. As it is said, the entire day and the upper and lower halves of the night, it shows how to act during the session and between sessions, that is, by walking and sitting, purify the mind from the five obscurations, and make it meaningful, as previously stated. These three, guarding the doors of the senses and acting with mindfulness, have the qualities of both session and between sessions, so here we take the between sessions. The conduct of sleeping is a break between sessions, so it should not be abandoned without meaning. How should it be done? Divide the day and night into three parts, spend the first part doing virtuous deeds, and when the middle part arrives, go to sleep, because the elements that are to be increased by sleep are to be increased by sleep. If the body is nourished in this way, it will be very easy and beneficial to be diligent in the two aspects of virtue. When sleeping, go out of the dwelling, wash your feet and enter, then lie down like a lion with your right side down and your left foot on top of your right foot. Lying down like a lion means that among all animals, the lion is strong, has a high mind, and is stable, and subdues others. Those who practice yoga without sleeping also subdue others with their strength and stay, so they lie down like a lion. However, the sleeping posture of pretas, gods, and those who indulge in desire is not like that, because they are all lazy, weak in diligence, and have little power to subdue others. In one category, lying down like a lion on the right side means that by nature the body does not become loose, and even if one falls asleep, one does not forget mindfulness, and one does not turn into deep sleep, and one does not dream sinful or bad dreams. If one does not sleep in this way, then all the faults contrary to the previous four arise. There are four ways to sleep with what kind of intention, namely, the perception of light, which is to take the sign of light well and sleep with a mind full of light, so that darkness does not arise in the mind when falling asleep. The mindful one is the recollection of virtuous and meaningful Dharma arising from listening, thinking, and meditating, and recollecting it until falling asleep.
