One should rely on virtuous friends with reverence. If you are close to them, even if you don't intentionally get it, the dust of their qualities will rub off on you. So it is said. Potowa said: We are mostly in danger of becoming tattered clothes, just as dragging tattered clothes will get you dung, but not gold. Instead of catching the qualities of the virtuous teacher, you will catch some faults, so you can't be careless in everything. So he said. Fifth, the fault of not relying on a spiritual friend is that if you rely on a spiritual friend in the wrong way, you will be plagued by diseases and demons in this life, and in the next life you will suffer immeasurable suffering in the lower realms for an immeasurable amount of time. In the Vajrapani Empowerment Tantra, it says: Blessed One, what is the result of those who despise the teacher? The Blessed One said: Vajrapani, the gods and the world will be afraid, do not say that. Lord of Secrets, nevertheless, let me say a little. Warrior, listen carefully. The unbearable, such as the uninterrupted, the hells that I have spoken of, are said to be their abode. There are infinite kalpas there. Therefore, in every way, never despise him. And, it is also said in the Fifty Verses: The one who reviles the teacher will die from plagues, leprosy, and various diseases, demons, plagues, and various poisons. Kings, fire, poisonous snakes, water and dakinis, thieves and demons, and evil guides will also kill him, and then sentient beings will go to hell. Never disturb the minds of the teachers, and if you do it out of ignorance, you will surely fall into hell. Whatever hell is taught, such as Avici, those who revile the teacher are also said to dwell there. And, it is quoted from the Difficult Explanation of the Black Enemy, written by the great scholar Shantipa: Whoever does not regard as a guru the one who has heard only one verse, will be born as a dog a hundred times, and then will be born as a leper. So it is said. Furthermore, qualities that have not arisen will not arise, and qualities that have arisen will also decline, just like the present manifest Buddha.

From the Samadhi Sutra: If one dwells with a mind of torment, contempt, or hatred towards another, it is impossible to attain merit. It is the same even if one does not generate the perception of a teacher. For example, if one does not generate respect and the perception of a lama or teacher towards individuals of the three vehicles and monks who teach the Dharma, it is impossible for them to attain Dharma they have not yet attained, or for what they have attained not to be lost, because disrespect causes the Dharma to decline. As it is said. If one associates with unwholesome spiritual friends and bad companions, merits will gradually diminish, and all faults will increase, giving rise to all undesirable things. Therefore, one should abandon them in every way. From the Mindfulness Sutra: The root of all attachment, hatred, and ignorance is a bad friend, who is like a poisonous tree. And from the Nirvana Sutra: Bodhisattvas fear bad friends more than they fear intoxicated elephants, etc., because the latter only harm the body, while the former destroys both virtue and purity of mind. Furthermore, it is said that these two only destroy the physical body and the Dharma body, and cannot cast one into the lower realms, whereas bad friends can certainly cast one into the lower realms. And from the Chapter on Truthfulness: Those whose minds are seized by the serpent of bad friends, and who have abandoned the nectar medicine of virtuous friends, when they hear the sacred Dharma, alas, they will fall from a great unguarded precipice. And from the Collection of Friends: Those who are without faith and are stingy, who speak falsely and are tale-bearers, the wise should not befriend them, and should not associate with wicked people. If wicked people commit evil, even if those who do not commit evil associate with them, doubts of committing evil will arise, and bad reputation will also increase. If one associates with those who should not be associated with, one becomes faulty due to their faults. Just as when an arrow is smeared with poison and placed in a quiver, even those not smeared with poison become contaminated. As it is said. An unwholesome spiritual friend is one upon whom, when relied upon, the faults and misconducts that are inherent do not diminish, and those that were not there before newly increase. Geshe Tonpa said: Even the lowest person, even if they associate with good friends, is worse than a middling person.
