Those who wish to rely on a teacher should understand these qualities and strive to find someone who possesses them. Disciples who wish to rely on a teacher should also understand these qualities and strive to develop them themselves. Because of the times, it is difficult to find someone who possesses all these qualities. If one cannot find such a person, what should one do? Pungzang asked: 'Just as a chariot with only one wheel, even if it has a horse, cannot travel on the road, so too, without a friend in practice, sentient beings will not attain accomplishment. That person should be intelligent, of good appearance, very clean, of noble lineage, and devoted to the Dharma. They should be courageous and brave, with subdued senses, speak sweetly, be generous and compassionate, able to endure hunger, thirst, and afflictions, and not worship Brahmins or other gods. They should be grateful, repaying kindness, and have faith in the Three Jewels. Such a person is a friend.' Since it is very rare to find someone who possesses all these qualities in this age of strife, one should rely on someone who has half, a quarter, or an eighth of these qualities as a friend in mantra practice. Thus, for a friend, it is said that at the very least, one should possess an eighth of the complete qualities. Lord Atisha said that this also applies to the lama. This is a saying from Potowa, compiled by Dolpa. Therefore, regarding the qualities mentioned, one should aim for someone who possesses at least an eighth of the qualities, combining the ease or difficulty of finding someone who possesses all the qualities completely. Second, the disciple who relies on the teacher: The Four Hundred says: 'An impartial, intelligent, and meaning-seeking listener is said to be a vessel.' The qualities of the speaker will not change into something else, nor will those of the listener. That is, someone who possesses three qualities is suitable as a vessel for listening to the Dharma. If one possesses these three qualities, the qualities of the speaker will appear as qualities and not as faults. Moreover, the qualities of the listener will also appear as qualities to that person and not as faults. If the qualities of the vessel are not complete, even if the virtuous friend who speaks the Dharma is very pure, they will be regarded as flawed due to the faults of the listener, and the faults of the speaker will also be regarded as qualities, as stated in the commentary. Therefore, even if one finds a virtuous friend who possesses all the qualities, it is difficult to recognize them as such. Therefore, relying on them after recognizing them has qualities.

These qualities must be complete. Among them, impartiality means being without bias. If there is bias, it will obscure and one will not see the good qualities, and one will not find the meaning of the well-spoken words. As it is said in the Essence of the Middle Way: "Because the mind is tormented by partiality, peace will never be realized." Partiality is attachment to one's own system and hatred towards other religious systems. One must examine one's own mind stream for such things and then abandon them. As it is said in the Pratimoksha Sutra of the Bodhisattva: "Abandoning one's own desires, one should respectfully abide in and respect the texts of the Khenpo and Acharya." Therefore, it should be like that. Is that enough? Even if one is impartial, if one does not have the power of intelligence to distinguish between the path of good teachings and the path that appears to be bad teachings, one is not a suitable vessel. Therefore, one must have the intelligence to understand both. In this way, one abandons the meaningless aspects and takes the meaningful ones. Is that enough? Even if one has both of these, if one does not act like a painted Dharma listener, one is not a suitable vessel. Therefore, one must have great desire for meaning. In the commentary, it is said that by adding respect and trust in the Dharma and the Dharma speaker, there are five. Thus, one has a great desire for the Dharma, one trusts well when listening to the Dharma, one has great respect for the Dharma and the Dharma speaker, and one abandons bad teachings and holds onto good teachings. The supporting condition for these four is having intelligence, and the opposing condition to be abandoned is being impartial. One should examine whether all the Dharma that the Lama can teach is complete. If it is complete, one should cultivate joy. If it is not complete, one must strive to have the cause of completeness in the future. Therefore, one should know these Dharmas as the basis. If one does not know the characteristics of these Dharmas, one will not be able to engage in investigation and analysis, and one will lose great meaning. Third, how to rely on it? In this way, one who has the qualities of a vessel should examine well whether the Lama has the qualities or not, as mentioned above. One should receive the kindness of the Dharma from the one who has the qualities. Among them, the liberation of Geshe Tonpa and Sangpuwa are different. Sangpuwa relied on many Lamas and listened to all the teachings. Therefore, on the way from Kham, a layperson was teaching the Dharma, and he also listened to him. The attendants looked down on the listener, saying that you are like that.
