After seeing the transformation, in general, all previous holy beings paid great attention to this, and especially the previous masters of this instruction paid even greater attention. This seems to be a great instruction, because if one does not gain certainty about this and one's mind does not transform, then no matter how profound and vast the Dharma is taught, it will be like falling into a celestial demon, and ultimately the Dharma itself will become an aid to afflictions, which is very common. Therefore, as the saying goes, if one makes a mistake on the first day, one will continue to make mistakes until the fifteenth. Therefore, those with wisdom should strive to use listening and explanation in a rotating manner, and at least have one of them. Because this is the supreme prerequisite for teaching instructions. These are the condensed essences out of concern for too many words, and detailed content should be learned from elsewhere. The preliminary stage of instruction teaching has been completed. Fourth, the order of guiding disciples with the actual instruction is divided into two: the root of the path—the way to rely on a spiritual friend, and the order of how to train the mind after relying on him. The first part is divided into two: explaining a little more to generate certainty, and briefly showing the way to practice. The first part is: From "Gathering the Essence of Certainty": "A person who abides in the lineage should rely on a noble spiritual friend." And from the sayings of Potowa compiled by Dolpa: "The beginning of all instructions is not abandoning a noble spiritual friend." As these say, for a disciple, even if one virtue arises and one fault decreases, the source of all happiness and well-being is a noble spiritual friend, so the way to rely on him is very important at first. In the "Bodhisattva Treasury" it says: "In short, obtaining and perfecting all the actions of a bodhisattva, and likewise, obtaining and perfecting the perfections, grounds, patience, samadhi, supernormal powers, dharani, eloquence, dedication and aspirations, and all the Buddha's teachings, depends on the lama. The lama is the root, the lama is the source, the lama is the place of birth and the source of birth, the lama produces, the lama increases, relies on the lama, the lama is the cause." Therefore, it is said. Potowa also said: "Liberation's

In practice, a guru is more important than anything else. That's right, even for things in this life that can be done by just watching, you still need someone to teach you. So, if you've just come from the lower realms and are going to a place you've never been before, how can you go without a guru? That's what they say. So, there are six ways to rely on a spiritual friend: the qualities of a virtuous spiritual friend to rely on, the qualities of a student who can rely on them, how the student relies on them, the benefits of relying on them, the faults of not relying on them, and a summary of these points. First, in general, many things are taught in the scriptures and commentaries, according to the different vehicles. Here, we are going to show a virtuous spiritual friend who gradually leads us on the path of the three types of individuals, and then leads us to the Great Vehicle, the path to Buddhahood. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: "A spiritual friend is disciplined, peaceful, and extremely peaceful, superior in qualities, diligent, rich in scripture, realized, eloquent, compassionate, and free from discouragement." This means that a student should rely on a spiritual friend who possesses ten qualities. Moreover, it is said that it is impossible to tame others without taming oneself, so a guru who tames others must first tame their own mindstream. So, how should one tame it? If you just do whatever practice comes along and then label whatever qualities you have in your mindstream as qualities of realization, it won't help. You need a way to tame your mindstream that is in accordance with the general teachings of the Buddha. That is, you must have the three trainings of ethics, concentration, and wisdom, which is why the three qualities of discipline, etc., are mentioned. Among these, discipline is the training in ethics. As it says in the Pratimoksha Sutra: "Always strive to whip it, the mind-horse is difficult to control, the sharp yoke with a hundred nails, this is the rein of individual liberation." And in the Vinaya-vibhanga it says: "This is the rein for taming the untamed." Just as a horse trainer tames a wild horse with a good rein, you should stop it from following improper objects, like a wild horse entering where it shouldn't, and through many efforts make it enter the proper direction. By training in ethics, you tame the horse of your mind. Peacefulness means that, for the comings and goings of acting properly and improperly, you guard your mind with mindfulness and awareness.
