Just as He (the Buddha) personally prepared the seat and so on, the Dharma is the field revered even by all the Buddhas, therefore, one should have great respect for the Dharma, remember the qualities and kindness of the teacher, and thereby generate respect. How should one explain with what kind of intention and action? Regarding intention: establish the five perceptions mentioned in the "Inquiry of Sagaramati," that is, generate the perception that it is beneficial to oneself, beneficial to the Dharma, the listener of the Dharma is like a patient, the Tathagata is like a great man, and the form of the Dharma remains for a long time, and cultivate love for the retinue. Abandon jealousy arising from the elevation of others, laziness of procrastination, fatigue from repeated explanations, boasting of oneself and discussing the faults of others, stinginess towards the Dharma, and attention to mundane affairs such as food and clothing. Think that for the sake of oneself and others attaining Buddhahood, the merit of the teachings is the means of my happiness. Regarding action: having bathed and being clean, wearing clean clothes, in a clean and pleasing place, sit on the Dharma seat and cushion. Recite the mantra of subduing the Maras, then within a hundred yojanas around it, the Maras and the gods of the Maras will not come, and even if they come, they will not be able to create obstacles, as stated in the "Inquiry of Sagaramati," therefore, recite that mantra. With the radiance of the face extremely bright, explain the branches with definite meaning, that is, metaphors, reasons, and scriptural citations. In the "Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Dharma" it says: The wise are always without jealousy, and also speak pleasant words with various meanings. Completely abandon laziness, do not generate the thought of fatigue. The wise completely abandon all displeasure, and should cultivate the power of love for the retinue. Day and night, one should also diligently cultivate the supreme Dharma. That wise one, with hundreds of thousands of kotis of metaphors, makes the retinue happy, and likewise makes them rejoice. For him, there is never any desire. Without considering food, drink, edibles, and utensils, clothes, bedding, Dharma robes, and even medicine for healing illnesses, he does not ask anything of the retinue. Furthermore, the wise one always (prays): May I and these sentient beings attain Buddhahood! Whatever Dharma is taught for the benefit of the world, all is considered the means of my happiness.

Mind. Thus it is said. As for the difference between where to preach and where not to preach, it is said in the Vinaya Sutra: "One should not do it without asking." As it is said, one should not preach without asking, and even when asking, one should examine the vessel, and if one knows it is a vessel, one can preach even without asking, as it is said in the Samadhiraja Sutra: "For the sake of giving Dharma, if you ask me, first say: I have not taught the supreme increase. If you are wise and learned, how can I preach before the great self? You should say that. Do not preach immediately, but do it after examining the vessel. If you know it is a vessel, you should preach even without asking." Thus it is said. Furthermore, it is said in the Vinaya Sutra: "One should not preach the Dharma while standing when one is sitting. One should not preach the Dharma while sitting when one is lying down. One should not preach the Dharma to one who is sitting on a low seat when one is sitting on a high seat. The same is true for bad and good. One should not preach the Dharma while walking behind when one is walking in front. One should not preach the Dharma while walking on the side of the road when one is walking on the road. One should not preach the Dharma when one's head is covered, wrapped, tilted, when one's neck is crossed, or when one's back is crossed. One should not preach the Dharma when one is wearing a headscarf, a hat, a diadem, a garland, or a turban. One should not preach the Dharma when one is riding an elephant or a horse, sitting on a palanquin or a mount, or wearing shoes. One should not preach the Dharma when one is holding a cane, an umbrella, a weapon, a sword, an enemy weapon, or wearing armor." Thus it is said, and the opposite of these can be preached, which is in the case of being healthy. Finally, how to do it in common? One should dedicate the merits arising from preaching and listening to the temporary and ultimate wishes with strong intention. If one preaches and listens to the Dharma in this way, even for just one session, the benefits mentioned in the sutras will undoubtedly arise. Relying on listening to and preaching the Dharma to the point, all the previously accumulated karmic obscurations such as disrespect for the Dharma and the Dharma speaker will be eliminated, and the newly accumulated ones will be interrupted. Because the way of preaching and listening is to the point, the instructions of preaching will also benefit the mindstream.
