Now, if one contracts a serious illness, one should seek a skilled doctor. When one meets him, one should be happy with whatever he says, and serve him respectfully. Likewise, one should seek a spiritual friend who teaches the Dharma, and once found, not treat him as a burden, but as an ornament, obeying everything he says and serving him respectfully. From the accumulation of precious qualities, it says: Therefore, a wise person with a strong desire to seek supreme Bodhi must subdue arrogance, and just as a group of patients relies on a doctor to cure their illnesses, one should rely on a virtuous spiritual friend without懈怠. This is because it is said so. Subsequently, to generate the perception of medicine for the teachings is: Just as a patient cherishes the medicine prescribed by the doctor, one should value the instructions and subsequent teachings given by the Dharma speaker, cherish them through various efforts, and not waste them through forgetting, etc. To cultivate diligence in practice, one should generate the perception of nursing a disease: Just as a patient sees that without taking the medicine prescribed by the doctor, the disease cannot be cured, and therefore takes it, one should see that without practicing the teachings taught by the Dharma speaker, one cannot destroy attachment, etc., and therefore practice diligently. One should not neglect practice and only focus on accumulating numerous nominal terms. Just as a leper with severed hands and feet will not change anything by taking one or two doses of medicine, we have been afflicted by severe afflictive diseases since beginningless time, and it is not enough to practice the meaning of the teachings only once or twice. Therefore, for the complete parts of the path, one should examine them with discriminating wisdom and strive continuously like a flowing river. The great teacher Chandragomin says in the Confession and Praise: Even there, the mind is always ignorant, and for a long time it has been nurturing diseases. For a leper with severed hands and feet, what can be done by taking medicine a few times? It is like that. Therefore, it is very important to have the perception of oneself as a patient. If one has this perception, others will also arise. If it remains only in words, one will not practice the meaning of the teachings for the sake of eliminating afflictions, but only listen. Just like seeking a doctor but not taking medicine, only focusing on prescribing medicine, the patient cannot be liberated from the disease.

It is like a parable from the Samadhiraja Sutra: People are sick, and their bodies suffer. For many years, they are sometimes unable to escape. They are troubled by long-term illnesses, and they seek doctors to cure their diseases. Again and again, they search and find a doctor who is wise and knowledgeable. The doctor, with compassion, gives them medicine, saying, "Take these medicines." They take many precious and good medicines but refuse to take the medicine that can cure their illness. It is not the doctor's fault, nor is it the medicine's fault, but the patient's own fault. Similarly, in this teaching, those who have renounced the world, even though they understand the power, meditation, and abilities of all the senses, do not diligently practice meditation. If they do not diligently practice, how can they be liberated from suffering? Just as I have proclaimed the most excellent Dharma, but if you hear it and do not practice it correctly, it is like a sick person carrying a bag full of medicine but unable to cure their own illness. Furthermore, it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: These things should be practiced with the body. What is the use of merely speaking words? Does merely reading medical texts benefit the sick? Therefore, one should cultivate the perception of diligence as a cure for illness. The diligence mentioned here is the practice of what should be accepted and what should be abandoned in the guru's teachings. To do this, one must understand, and to understand, one must listen. The necessity of understanding after listening is also for the sake of practice. Therefore, it is crucial to put into practice the meaning of what has been heard, according to one's ability. As it is said in the Chapter on Hearing: If one hears a lot but does not properly keep the precepts, then one is blamed for the sake of the precepts, and one's hearing is not complete. If one hears little but properly keeps the precepts, then one is praised for the sake of the precepts, and one's hearing becomes complete. If one hears little and does not properly keep the precepts, then one is blamed for both, and one's conduct is not complete. If one hears a lot and properly keeps the precepts, then one is praised for both, and one's conduct becomes complete. Also, even if one has heard well and understood the essence of hearing, even if one has understood the essence of meditation, but if...
