For those who are reckless and impudent, hearing and knowledge will not become important things. Whoever delights in the Dharma taught by the Noble Ones and acts accordingly with body and speech, those who are patient, love friends, and restrain their senses will attain the other shore of hearing and knowledge. Thus it is said. From "Encouraging Higher Intention" it is also said: 'My practice has declined, what should I do now?' At the time of death, one grieves like a child. If one fails to find the profound truth, one will suffer greatly. These are the faults of being fond of talking.' Thus it is said. Like sitting among a crowd watching a dance, or like recounting the virtues of other heroes, one's own diligence will decline, these are the faults of being fond of talking. Thus it is said. The skin of the sugarcane has no essence, the delightful taste is inside. People who eat the skin cannot obtain the delicious taste of the sugarcane. Just like the skin, so is talking; like the taste, so are meaning and mind within it. Therefore, abandon the habit of being fond of talking, always be mindful, and contemplate the meaning. Thus it is said. To regard the Tathagata as a supreme being is to remember the speaker of the Dharma, the Bhagavan, and thereby generate reverence. To generate the perception of the Dharma abiding for a long time is to think, 'If by relying on hearing such Dharma, the Buddha's teachings could abide in the world for a long time, how wonderful would that be!' Furthermore, when teaching or listening to the Dharma, set aside one's own continuum. If one sets aside the Dharma to talk about something else, no matter what one says, it will not be to the point. Therefore, one must listen in order to ascertain one's own continuum. For example, if one wants to discern whether there are stains on one's face, one looks in a mirror to understand and remove the stains. When one's own actions are flawed, they will also appear in the mirror of the Dharma when listening to the Dharma. At that time, one will feel sorrow that one's continuum has become like this. Then, one begins to eliminate faults and cultivate virtues, therefore one needs to follow the Dharma. As it is said in the Jataka: 'When I clearly see the image of my bad deeds in the clear mirror of the Dharma, great sorrow will arise in my mind, and I will turn to the Dharma.' Thus, when the son of Sudasa requested to teach the Dharma to Prince Moon, the Bodhisattva's thought was

It is like teaching the Dharma knowing that one is a vessel for hearing the Dharma. In short, I will attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings. To attain that, one must learn its cause. To learn it, one must understand it. To understand it, it seems necessary to hear the Dharma, so one should generate the intention to listen to the Dharma. Remembering the benefits of hearing, one should rejoice and abandon the faults of the vessel, and then listen. Secondly, there are four aspects to the manner of teaching the Dharma: contemplating the benefits of teaching the Dharma, respecting the teacher and the Dharma, with what kind of intention and conduct to teach the Dharma, and the difference between where to teach and where not to teach. The first point is: teaching the Dharma without regard to the defilements of gain, respect, and fame, etc., is of great benefit. From encouraging higher intention, the Maitreya Question Sutra says: 'Maitreya, these twenty are the benefits of the Dharma giving without defilement, the benefits of giving the Dharma without desiring gain and respect.' What are these twenty? They are as follows: one will become mindful, one will become wise, one will become intelligent, one will become steadfast, one will become wise, one will realize transcendental wisdom, one will reduce desire, one will reduce hatred, one will reduce ignorance, the demon will not find fault with him, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, will remember him, non-humans will protect him, the gods will increase his splendor, unfriendly people will not find fault with him, his friends will not be separated, his words will be gentle, he will obtain fearlessness, he will increase inner happiness, he will be praised by the wise, and his Dharma giving will also be worthy of remembrance.' Etc., one should generate faith from the depths of one's heart in the benefits spoken of in many sutras. Among them, regarding 'having steadfastness', the new translation of the Compendium of Trainings translates it as 'having faith', while some old translations translate it as 'having diligence'. Respecting the teacher and the Dharma is: as stated in the Arya Prajnaparamita Sutra: The Bhagavan
