It should be understood as fighting against afflictions, saying, "This is that, ah! It has come," as it is said. Secondly, there are two ways of accumulating karma: one is to identify the karma to be accumulated, and the other is the way of accumulating it. The first has two types: mental karma and karma resulting from thought. The first is: As stated in the Compendium of Abhidharma, "What is thought? It is the manifestation of mental activity, the karma of mind, which causes the mind to engage in virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral actions." As it is said, the mental events arising from the mind that move and stimulate the objects of mind that are in accordance with oneself are the karma of mind. The second is: the physical and verbal karma that is aroused by that thought, as stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Karma is thought and what is done by it. Thought is the karma of mind, and from it arise physical and verbal karma." Because it is said so. The Vaibhashikas consider physical and verbal karma as revealing and non-revealing karma, and only those with form can be distinguished. However, Master Vasubandhu refuted this view, stating that the revealing physical and verbal karma and the thought that arises simultaneously are the same, so both karmas are said to be thought. Generally speaking, karma has three types: virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral, but here are the first two. Virtuous karma also has two types: contaminated and uncontaminated. Here, it is contaminated, and among the contaminated, there are two types: those in the continuum of noble ones and those in the continuum of ordinary beings, and here it is the latter. Among them, non-virtuous karma is non-meritorious karma, and meritorious karma is virtuous karma included in the desire realm. Immovable karma is virtuous karma with contamination included in the form and formless realms. As it is also said in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Meritorious karma is the virtuous karma of the desire realm, and immovable karma is born from the upper realms." Why is it called immovable karma? For example, in the desire realm, some karma that matures into the body of gods matures into the body of humans, animals, and hungry ghosts, which is the movement of results. Similarly, in the upper realms, karma that matures in other places does not mature in other places, so it is called immovable karma. The Treasury of Knowledge says: "Because the realms are in those places, karma matures, therefore it is immovable." Because it is said so. The second way to accumulate karma is: generally speaking, noble ones have virtuous

There are also instances of generating and accumulating karma. Unwholesome actions are also accumulated by Stream-enterers and Once-returners. However, it is impossible for noble beings to accumulate the karma that throws beings into the cycle of suffering in the lower realms and the cycle of happiness in the higher realms. As stated in the Root Verses on the Middle Way, "The root of samsara is action; therefore, the wise do not act. Therefore, the unwise are the doers, because the wise see that (reality)." Also, the teacher Vasubandhu said, "Seeing the truth, there is no throwing." Therefore, as long as one is under the control of clinging to the self of a person, one will accumulate throwing karma. Once one directly realizes the suchness of selflessness, even if one is born in samsara due to karma and afflictions, one will not newly accumulate throwing karma. Just as a strong person strikes a weak person, Stream-enterers and Once-returners do not accept and cling to self-grasping, as stated in the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra. Therefore, those who accumulate the karma that throws beings into samsara are all ordinary beings up to the peak of the Mahāyāna path of application. Thus, those who are controlled by contaminated ignorance and the view of the perishable aggregate, if they perform non-virtuous actions such as killing with the three doors, they accumulate non-meritorious karma. If they perform virtuous actions of the desire realm, such as giving and keeping precepts, they accumulate meritorious karma. If they cultivate calm abiding and so forth, which are included in meditation and the formless realms, they accumulate unwavering karma. Then, if one sees all the perfections of existence as faults, and is motivated by the desire for liberation, and accumulates many virtuous actions, and also the virtuous mind that is in accordance with the wisdom that properly examines the meaning of selflessness, are these virtuous actions the cause of the origin of samsara? In general, those on the path of accumulation and the path of preparation accumulate throwing karma that they are pleased with. However, the virtuous actions that are motivated by such intention and are in accordance with the wisdom that examines selflessness are the antidote to craving for future existence, and because the root of samsara, self-grasping, engages in contradictory objects and aspects, it is not the origin of throwing karma.
