These ten afflictions are explained as they appear in the explanations of the Compendium of Topics, the Grounds of Yogic Practice, and the Differentiation of the Five Aggregates. Secondly, the order of how they arise is as follows: If one considers the view of the transitory collection and ignorance as separate, it is like when a rope is coiled and a little darkness falls, so that the state of the rope is not clear, and then the thought arises of perceiving it as a snake. Similarly, from the darkness of ignorance that obscures the clear state of the aggregates, the delusion of mistaking the aggregates as self arises, and from that, other afflictions arise. If one considers these two as one, then the view of the transitory collection itself is the root of the afflictions. When the view of the transitory collection grasps at self, it creates a distinction between oneself and others. Having made such a distinction, attachment arises towards one's own side, and hatred arises towards the side of others, and arrogance also arises from focusing on self. And one grasps at that self as permanent or annihilated, and generates views of self, etc., and the highest attachment to bad behaviors related to that arises. Similarly, towards the teacher who teaches selflessness, and the results of actions, the four truths, and the Three Jewels, etc., that he teaches, one generates wrong views that these do not exist, or one generates doubt as to whether such things exist or not, whether they are correct or not. As it says in the Pramāṇavārttika, "If there is self, then one knows there is other. From the division of self and other, attachment and hatred arise. From these and their connections, all faults will occur." Therefore, what has been said above is the way in which afflictions arise. Thirdly, the causes for the arising of afflictions are six: The basis is the latent tendencies of the afflictions. The object is the appearance of objects that are in accordance with the arising of afflictions. Association is following bad friends who are not noble individuals. Explanation is listening to false teachings. Familiarity is increasing the power of previous familiarity with afflictions. Attention is the inappropriate attention of superimposing signs of attractiveness and unattractiveness, and grasping at impermanence as permanence, etc. Fourthly, the faults are: When afflictions arise, first, the mind is completely afflicted, one has a reversed perception of the object, the latent tendencies become more stable, afflictions of the same type do not cease, harm is caused to oneself, others, and both, faults are generated in this life and the next, and suffering and displeasure

Experiencing happiness, causing suffering such as birth, being far from Nirvana, declining from virtue, declining from enjoyment, becoming discouraged when entering the cycle of existence, having no joy and fearlessness, increasing ill-repute in all directions, being reproached by the Teacher and protectors, etc., dying in regret, and even after death, being born in the lower realms and not obtaining one's own benefit. Also, in the Ornament of the Sutras, it says: "The afflictions destroy the self, destroy sentient beings, and destroy morality. Having defects, attainment makes one inferior, and the protectors and thus the Teacher similarly reproach. Disputes and ill-repute will cause one to be born in a place without leisure. Obtaining and not obtaining, due to decline, one obtains great suffering in the mind." Thus it is said. Also, in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, it says: "Enemies such as hatred and desire do not have limbs such as arms and legs. They are not brave or intelligent, yet how do they make me a slave? They dwell in my mind and act as they please, harming me as they wish. Is it reasonable to be patient and not angry with them? It is a situation where patience should be condemned. Even if all the gods and demigods were to rise up against me as enemies, they could not lead me and throw me into the fire of Avici. This powerful enemy of afflictions, when encountered, can turn even Mount Meru into ashes in an instant. My enemy of afflictions is like that, long and without beginning or end. Other enemies cannot endure like that, continuously causing harm. If one serves them in harmony, everything will bring benefit and happiness. If one serves the afflictions, they will turn away and cause suffering and harm." One should know the faults that are spoken of in this way. Gonpawa said: To abandon afflictions, one must know the faults, characteristics, antidotes, and causes of arising of afflictions. Having known the faults, one should view them as faults and regard them as enemies. If one does not know the faults, one will not regard them as enemies, so one should think as it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras and the Bodhisattvacharyavatara. He also said that in order to know the characteristics of afflictions, one should listen to the Abhidharma, and at the very least, one should listen to the Analysis of the Five Aggregates, and after recognizing the root and branch afflictions, whenever any of attachment, hatred, etc., arise in the mind-stream.
