Furthermore, in the words of the Assembly, it is said: "Whoever, whether with form or without form, transcends suffering and pain, possesses the nature of meditative bliss, and remains unmoving for eons, even that is not true liberation, for they will fall again. Having emerged as if from the waves of suffering in the lower realms, even with effort, they cannot remain for long, like a bird soaring in the sky. Like an arrow shot with all the strength of a child, it is destined to fall. Like a long-burning flame, it diminishes with each moment. The suffering of 'all compounded things are subject to change' constantly afflicts us." Thus it is said. Therefore, contemplating the common and individual sufferings of beings in the five or six realms, one should generate revulsion towards samsara. If so, one will contemplate what causes samsara, and thus inquiry into the cause will arise. Secondly, contemplating the process of engaging in samsara from the perspective of origination is threefold: how afflictions arise, how they accumulate karma, and how death, transference, and rebirth occur. Firstly, although both karma and afflictions are necessary for the accomplishment of samsara, afflictions are the primary factor. This is because if there are no afflictions, even if there are countless previously accumulated karmas, just as a seed cannot sprout without moisture and soil, the sprout of suffering will not arise because there is no cooperating condition for karma. However, if there are afflictions, even if there is no previously accumulated karma, one will immediately accumulate new karma and take a future body. As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "No karma other than attachment to existence can project, because the cooperating factor is exhausted." And, "If craving exists, it will arise again." Thus it is said. Therefore, it is crucial to rely on the antidotes to afflictions, which depends on understanding afflictions, so one should become skilled in afflictions. This has four aspects: identifying afflictions, the order in which they arise, the causes of afflictions, and the faults of afflictions. First, the general characteristic of afflictions is: As it is said in the Abhidharmasamuccaya: "Any dharma that arises with the characteristic of being extremely unpacified, that is, because of its arising, the mindstream becomes extremely unpacified, that is the characteristic of afflictions." Thus it is said.

Whatever arises causes the mind stream to be extremely unpacified. Regarding their individual characteristics, among the ten afflictions, desire is: clinging to attractive and pleasing objects, whether external or internal, and then becoming attached to them. Just as oil seeps into cloth and is difficult to remove, so too, this clings to and spreads to its own object, making it difficult to separate from that object. Anger is: focusing on sentient beings and suffering, as well as places of suffering such as weapons and thorns, and universally tormenting oneself, with a rough mind, thinking of harming those objects. Pride is: relying on the view of the aggregates, focusing on external or internal high and low, good and bad, and becoming arrogant, entering with an attitude of superiority. Ignorance is: an affliction of not knowing, due to the mind being unclear about the four truths, the law of karma, and the nature of the Three Jewels. Doubt is: focusing on the three, such as the truth, and thinking whether it exists or not, whether it is so or not. The view of the aggregates is: focusing on the aggregates of grasping, thinking "I" and "mine," an affliction of wisdom that sees self and what belongs to self. Among these, "aggregate" is impermanent and "collection" is many, therefore, the object of view is merely impermanent and manifold dharmas. There is no permanent and singular person. It is named the view of the aggregates in order to show this. The view of extremes is: focusing on the self that is grasped by the view of the aggregates, and considering it to be permanent and unchanging, or considering it to be annihilation, without continuity from this life to the next, an affliction of wisdom. The view of holding views as supreme is: focusing on any of the three: the view of the aggregates, the view of extremes, and wrong views, and the aggregates of the one who holds views that arise from relying on these, an affliction of wisdom that holds them as supreme. The view of holding ethics and vows as supreme is: the ethics of abandoning immoral conduct, and the vows that determine the rituals and behavior, as well as the conduct of body and speech, and the aggregates that arise from relying on these, considering them to be able to purify sins and liberate from afflictions, and to certainly liberate from samsara, an affliction of wisdom. Wrong view is: denouncing and saying that there is no past or future life and no law of karma, etc., and holding the powerful and the lord, etc., as the cause of beings, an affliction of wisdom.
