Furthermore, the Jataka states: "Whoever hears the Dharma and develops faith and joy, Goodness and joy become firm, Wisdom increases and ignorance disappears, One's own share can also be obtained. Hearing the Dharma is a lamp to dispel darkness, Thieves and others cannot carry it away, It is the supreme treasure, A weapon to destroy all ignorant enemies, A supreme friend who shows expedient methods and secret instructions, A close friend who does not change even in poverty, A harmless medicine for suffering and disease, A supreme army to destroy the army of great sins, It is also the supreme of fame, glory, and treasure, Meeting with virtuous people is a supreme birth, In gatherings, the wise are pleased." It also says: "After hearing the Dharma, diligently practice, Making it the essence, From the dangerous place of existence, one can easily be liberated." As it is said, one should generate faith and understanding from the depths of one's heart in the benefits of hearing the Dharma. Moreover, the appearance of the Buddha is in hundreds of kalpas, and his Dharma is also rare like that, so one should generate the thought of it being like a precious jewel; moment by moment increasing the co-emergent wisdom, so one should generate the thought of it being like an eye; with the eye of wisdom, one can see suchness and all that exists, so one should generate the thought of it being like light; ultimately it can bestow the fruit of peace and great Bodhi, so one should generate the thought of great benefit; even now one can obtain the cause of those two, the bliss of Shamatha and Vipassanā, so one should generate the thought of being without fault. As it is said in the Bodhisattva-bhumi, one should listen with these five thoughts, the mind is to contemplate the benefits of hearing the Dharma. Secondly, in the Sutra of Ksitigarbha it says: "Listen to the Dharma with one-pointed faith and reverence, One should not slander or revile it, One should offer to the one who speaks the Dharma, Viewing him as the Buddha and generating reverence." As it is said, one should view the speaker of the Dharma as the Buddha, respectfully serve him with a lion throne and so on, offer him wealth, and abandon disrespect. Also, as it is said in the Bodhisattva-bhumi: "One should not attend to the one who has extinguished all defilements and the speaker of the Dharma in five places." Thus, one should listen, being free from arrogance, which means listening with six things: listening at the right time, respectfully serving, diligently attending, not being angry, practicing accordingly, and not finding fault. Being free from the defilement of contempt means generating respect for the Dharma and the speaker of the Dharma.

And not to distinguish between the two. Not to pay attention to five things is to abandon the thought of 'I will not listen to this person' because of speaking in a way that is not in accordance with discipline, of low birth, of ugly appearance, of bad words, and of harsh and unpleasant words. It is also said in the Jataka: 'Sit on a very low seat, fully generate the glory of taming, look with joyful eyes, like drinking the nectar of words. Generate respect and pay homage with one mind. With a very happy and immaculate mind, listen to the Dharma with reverence, as a sick person listens to the words of a doctor.' As it is said. There are actually two ways of listening: abandoning the three faults of the vessel and relying on the six perceptions. The first is: the vessel is upside down, and even if the mouth is facing up, it is not clean, and even if it is clean, the bottom is broken. In that case, even if the sky rains, it will not enter, and even if it does, it will be contaminated by being unclean, and the purpose of drinking, etc., will not be achieved, and even if it is not contaminated by being unclean, it will not stay inside, but will leak and flow away. Similarly, even if you are sitting in a Dharma teaching seat, you will not listen carefully, and even if you do, you will misunderstand or have a faulty motivation, etc., and even if there are no such faults, you will not firmly remember the words and meanings you heard at the time of listening, but will lose them due to forgetting, etc. Then, hearing the Dharma will not become a great benefit, so it is necessary to be free from those faults. To counteract these three faults, the sutra says, 'Listen well and keep it in mind.' That is, in the Bodhisattva-bhumi, it is said that one should listen with the desire to know everything, with a focused mind, with an attentive ear, with a focused mind, and with all one's heart thinking. Relying on the six perceptions, the first is to generate the perception of oneself as a sick person, as it is said in the Bodhicaryavatara: 'Even if one is afflicted with ordinary diseases, one must act according to the doctor's words, let alone being constantly afflicted with hundreds of diseases such as desire? 'Like this, because we are tormented by long-term, difficult-to-cure, and severely painful diseases - afflictions such as desire, we must recognize that we are always in a state of illness. Karmapa said: 'In reality, we are not sick. If we meditate like that, it will be reversed, because we are afflicted with chronic diseases of the three poisons, and the condition is very serious, but we are not aware that we are sick at all.'
