Hearing good words, knowing them to be the essence, and even if understanding samadhi as the essence, if someone acts carelessly and violently, their hearing and knowledge will not become a great matter. Those who delight in the Dharma taught by the noble ones, and act accordingly with body and speech, those who are patient, delight in friends, restrain their senses, will attain the other shore of hearing and knowledge. Thus it is said. From "Encouraging Higher Intention" it is also said: "I have declined in practice, what should I do now?" At the time of death, children only increase their sorrow. If the profound meaning is not found, there will be extreme suffering. These are the faults of being fond of speaking. Thus it is said. Just as in the midst of watching dance, praising the merits of other heroes, one becomes negligent and lax, this is the fault of being fond of speaking. Thus it is said. The sugarcane peel has no essence, the delightful taste is within it. If people only eat the sugarcane peel, they cannot obtain the deliciousness of sugarcane from it. Just like the sugarcane peel, speaking is like that, like the delicious taste, the essence in this is the meaning. Therefore, one should abandon being fond of speaking, constantly maintain mindfulness, and contemplate its meaning. Thus it is said. To place the thought of a holy person on the Thus-Gone One is to remember the speaker, the Bhagavan, and generate respect. To place the thought of the Dharma's principles abiding long in the world is to think: If one could rely on hearing such Dharma, so that the Victorious One's teachings would abide long in the world, wouldn't that be wonderful! Furthermore, when teaching or listening to the Dharma, one should set aside one's own continuum. If one sets aside the Dharma and speaks, then no matter what is said, it will not hit the point, therefore one must listen in order to ascertain one's own continuum. For example, if one wants to observe whether there are blemishes such as black moles on the face, one should look in a mirror to understand and remove the blemishes. Similarly, when listening to the Dharma, one's own faulty actions will also appear in the mirror of the Dharma. At that time, the feeling that my continuum has become like this will arise in the mind, and then one will begin to remove faults and cultivate merits, therefore one must learn to follow the Dharma. As it is said in the Jataka: "If in the clear mirror of the Dharma, one sees the image of one's own bad deeds, great sorrow will arise in the mind, and I will turn towards the Dharma."

When the son of Data asked the Prince Moon to teach the Dharma, the Bodhisattva, knowing that his mind had become a vessel for listening to the Dharma, spoke the Dharma accordingly. In short, I must attain Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings. To attain that, one must practice its cause. For that, one must understand. For that, it seems necessary to hear the Dharma, so generate the thought to listen to the Dharma. Remembering the benefits of hearing, generate joy and eliminate the faults of the vessel, and then listen. Second, there are four ways of teaching the Dharma: contemplating the benefits of teaching the Dharma, generating respect for the teacher and the Dharma, with what kind of intention and conduct to teach, and the difference between where to teach and not to teach. First, teaching the Dharma without regard to worldly things such as gain, respect, and fame is of great benefit. From the perspective of inspiring superior intention, Maitreya said: 'Maitreya, these twenty are the benefits of the Dharma giving without worldly defilements, the benefits of giving the Dharma without seeking gain and respect.' What are these twenty? Namely: becoming mindful, becoming wise, becoming intelligent, becoming steadfast, becoming wise, realizing wisdom beyond the world, greed becoming smaller, hatred becoming smaller, ignorance becoming smaller, the devil cannot find an opportunity, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, will remember, non-humans will protect, The gods will generate respect for him, unfriendly people cannot find an opportunity, his friends will not separate, words will become dignified, he will attain fearlessness, his heart will become more peaceful, he will be praised by the wise, and his Dharma giving will also be worthy of remembrance.' And so on, from the depths of the heart, generate faith in the benefits spoken of in many sutras. Among them, having steadfastness, in the new translation of the Compendium of Trainings, it is translated as having faith, while in some old translations, it is translated as having diligence.
