And, because the manner of explaining and listening hits the key points, it is seen that even the instructions given can benefit the mindstream. In general, all the previous holy beings paid close attention to this, and especially the previous lamas of this instruction were extremely diligent. This seems to be a great instruction, because if one does not gain certainty in this and one's mind does not change, no matter how profound and vast the Dharma is explained, it will be like being possessed by gods and demons, and the Dharma itself will become an aid to afflictions, which is very common. Therefore, it is like the saying, "If you miss the first day, you miss the fifteenth." Those with intelligence should strive to have at least one of the methods of transforming listening and explaining into the path, by alternating between explaining and listening. This is because this is the supreme preliminary for showing the instructions. These are condensed summaries of the essentials, fearing too many words, and the details should be learned from elsewhere. The preliminary practices of the instructions have been explained. Fourth, the order of how to guide disciples with the actual instructions is twofold: the root of the path, the way to rely on a spiritual friend, and the order of how to train the mind after relying on one. The first has two parts: explaining in a little more detail to generate certainty, and teaching the method of cultivation in brief. The first is: From "Essential Collection of the Heart": "Those who abide in the lineage, should rely on a noble spiritual friend." And, from the collection of sayings of Potowa compiled by Dolpa: "The beginning of all instructions is not abandoning a noble spiritual friend." As it says, for the disciple, the source of all happiness and well-being, even to the extent of generating one quality and diminishing one fault in the mindstream, is the holy spiritual friend, so it is important to rely on him or her first. From the Bodhisattva Pitaka: "In short, obtaining and perfecting all the conduct of a Bodhisattva, and similarly, obtaining and perfecting the perfections, grounds, patience, samadhi, superknowledges, dharanis, eloquence, dedication, aspiration, and all the qualities of a Buddha, depends on the lama. The lama is the root. The lama is the source. The lama is the birthplace and the origin. The lama generates. The lama increases. Rely on the lama.

It is because it is said (in the scriptures) that the guru is the root. Potowa also said: To achieve liberation, there is nothing more important than the guru. Even for the affairs of this life, it is enough to look and do, but even so, a teacher is indispensable. How can one go to a place one has never been to, just emerged from the lower realms, without a guru? Thus, there are six ways to rely on a spiritual friend: the characteristics of a virtuous spiritual friend to be relied upon, the characteristics of a disciple who can rely on, how to rely on him, the benefits of relying on him, the faults of not relying on him, and a summary of these points. First, in general, many kinds are taught in the scriptures, including the sutras and their commentaries, according to the views of different vehicles. Here, we will talk about a virtuous spiritual friend who gradually leads sentient beings into the path of the three types of individuals, and ultimately leads them to the path of enlightenment, the Great Vehicle. As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: A spiritual friend is subdued, peaceful, extremely peaceful, superior in qualities, diligent, rich in scriptures, realized reality, skilled in speech, possesses loving-kindness, and relies on abandoning discouragement. Therefore, a disciple should rely on a spiritual friend who possesses these ten qualities. Moreover, it is said that it is impossible to subdue others without subduing oneself, so the guru who subdues others must first subdue his own mindstream. So, how should one subdue? If one just practices casually and then gives one's mindstream a name of realized qualities, it is useless. There must be a way to subdue the mindstream that is consistent with the entire Buddha's teachings, which is to be determined in the three trainings. Therefore, (in the scriptures) three things such as subduing are said. Among them, subduing is the training of morality, as it is said in the Sutra of Individual Liberation: The mind-horse that is constantly chased with diligence, difficult to control, with a hundred sharp nails, the rein is this individual liberation. And in the Vinaya-vibhaṅga it says: This is the rein for subduing the unsubdued. Just as a horse trainer subdues a wild horse with a good rein, if (the mind) follows the licentious objects, like a wild horse, and does what it should not do, it must be stopped; through many efforts, it is made to enter what should be done, and this is how the mind-horse is subdued through the training of morality.
