Therefore. Thus, the lama who accomplishes liberation is the root of constant aspirations. Therefore, those who wish to rely on a lama should understand these and strive to find one who possesses qualities. Those who wish to rely on disciples should also understand these and strive to possess those qualities. Because it is difficult to find those qualities complete due to the times, what should be done if one does not find such a one? As asked by Strong Arm: Just as a chariot with only one wheel, Even if it has a horse, cannot travel on the road, Similarly, if there is no companion for practice, Sentient beings will not attain accomplishment. That one should be intelligent, of good form, greatly pure, Of noble lineage and devoted to Dharma, Greatly confident and brave, with subdued senses, Speaking sweetly, generous and compassionate, Able to endure hunger, thirst and afflictions, And not worship brahmins or other gods, Grateful and respectful, repaying kindness, And a friend who has faith in the Three Jewels. Since those who possess all such qualities completely Are extremely rare in the age of strife, Therefore, one with half, a quarter, or an eighth of the qualities, Should rely on such a one as a companion for mantra practitioners. It is said that for a companion, one should at least possess an eighth of all the qualities. Lord Atisha said that this also applies to the lama. This is a saying of Potowa, compiled by Dolpa. Therefore, for those who completely possess all the qualities, one should do one's best, and at least possess an eighth of them, adapted to the degree of difficulty. Second, the disciple who relies: From the Four Hundred: Impartial, intelligent, and desirous of meaning, A listener is said to be a vessel. The qualities of the speaker, in other ways, Will not turn into faults, nor will those of the listener. It is said that one who possesses three qualities is suitable as a vessel for listening, and if one possesses these three, then the qualities of the speaker of Dharma will appear as qualities and will not turn into faults, and moreover, the qualities of the listener will also appear as qualities to that person and will not turn into faults. If those qualities of a vessel are not complete, then even if the Dharma-speaking friend is very pure, he will be considered to have faults due to the faults of the listener, and the faults of the speaker will also be taken as qualities, as it is said in the commentary. Therefore, relying on a spiritual friend

Even if you find someone who is complete in every way, it is difficult to recognize them. Therefore, in order to recognize and rely on them, you must have these qualities. Among them, impartiality means being without bias. If there is bias, it will obscure your vision and you will not see the good qualities, and you will not be able to understand the meaning of the well-spoken words. As it says in the Madhyamaka-hrdaya: "Because of being biased, the mind is afflicted, and peace will never be realized." Bias means being attached to one's own system and hating the religious systems of others. You should examine your own mind and abandon this bias. As it says in the Bodhisattva Pratimoksha Sutra: "You should abandon your own desires and respectfully abide in the treatises of the Khenpo and Acharya." Is that enough? Even if you are impartial, if you do not have the wisdom to distinguish between the well-spoken true path and the poorly spoken seeming path, you cannot be a vessel. Therefore, you must have the wisdom to understand both. In this way, you can abandon the meaningless aspects and take the essence. Is it enough to have just these two? Even if you have these two, if you do not strive like listening to the Dharma in a painting, you cannot be a vessel. Therefore, you must have a strong desire for the Dharma. In the commentary, it says that there are five qualities, adding respect and trust for the Dharma and the speaker of the Dharma. Therefore, it is necessary to have a strong desire to know the Dharma, to pay attention when listening to the Dharma, to have great respect for the Dharma and the speaker of the Dharma, and to abandon the poorly spoken and accept the well-spoken. The supporting condition for these four is to have wisdom, and the opposing condition is to abandon bias. You should examine whether the Dharma taught by the Lama has all these qualities. If it does, then cultivate joy. If it does not, then you should strive to create the conditions until you have them in the future. Therefore, you should understand these qualities of the basis. If you do not understand the characteristics of these qualities, you will not be able to engage in observation and analysis, and you will lose great benefits. Third, the way to rely on him: In this way, a person who has the qualities of a vessel should carefully examine whether the Lama has the qualities, as mentioned above, and receive the grace of the Dharma from the Lama who has the qualities. Among them, Geshe Stonpa and Sangpuwa had different ways of liberation. Sangpuwa relied on many Lamas and listened to everything they said. Therefore, on the way from Kham, a layperson taught the Dharma.
