Faith protects and increases all virtues. It dispels doubts and liberates from all rivers. Faith is a symbol of a happy and prosperous city. Faith is pure and in accordance with the mind. Abandoning pride, it is the root of respect. Faith is the best of wealth, treasures, and feet. Like a hand, it is the root of accumulating merit. Thus it is said. Also in the Tenth Dharma Sutra, it says: 'By what is one led to definite emergence? Faith is the supreme vehicle. Therefore, people with intelligence should rely on following faith. For those who do not have faith, white dharmas do not arise, just as when seeds are burned by fire, green sprouts do not grow.' Thus, from the perspective of following and turning away, it is said that faith is the basis of all virtues. When a disciple asked Atisha (Jowo Je): 'In Tibet, there are many who meditate and practice, but they do not possess special qualities,' Jowo replied: 'The qualities of the Mahayana, whether great or small, all arise dependent on the lama, but you Tibetans only have an ordinary perception of the lama, how can qualities arise?' And when someone loudly asked Jowo: 'Please give the instructions of Atisha!' Jowo replied: 'Hehehe, my ears are very good, very good, the so-called key instruction is faith, faith, faith!' As it is said, faith is extremely important. Among them, in general, there are many kinds of faith in the Three Jewels, karma and its effects, and the Four Noble Truths, but here it refers to faith in the lama. So, how should a disciple view the lama? In the Vajrapani Empowerment Tantra, it says: 'Lord of Secrets, how should a disciple view the teacher?' It should be just like how one views the Buddha, the Bhagavan. If one's mind is like that, then virtuous deeds will always arise. That one will become a Buddha who benefits all the worlds.' Thus it is said. In the Mahayana sutras, it is also said that one should generate the perception of the teacher. It is also said so in the Vinaya. The meaning of these is: Just as when one knows it is the Buddha, the mind of finding faults in him does not arise, but the mind of thinking of his virtues arises. Similarly, for the lama, one should intentionally abandon all forms of finding faults and cultivate the mind of thinking of his virtues. Also in that tantra, it says: 'One should take the teacher's virtues, and never take the faults. If one takes the virtues, one will attain accomplishments.'

O! If you cling to faults, you will not achieve anything. As it is said, you should do this: Thus, although the lama has many virtues, if you examine him from the aspect of his slight faults, it will become an obstacle to your own accomplishment. Even if there are many faults, if you do not examine them from the aspect of faults, but cultivate faith from the aspect of virtues, it will become a cause for your own accomplishment. Therefore, whether it is your own lama, no matter how big or small the faults are, you should think about the faults of speculating from that aspect, generate a lot of renunciation, and prevent it. If, due to carelessness or increased afflictions, faults arise, you should also strive to confess and protect. If you do so, it will gradually become weaker. Furthermore, for those who have virtues such as discipline, learning, or faith, you should take their side with your mind and think about their virtues. When you are accustomed to this, even if you see some faults, you will not be hindered in your faith because your mind holds the side of virtue. For example, even if you see many virtues in a side that you do not like, the mind that sees the faults is so strong that it overwhelms the mind that sees the virtues. Also, even if you see many faults in yourself, if the mind that sees a little of your own virtue is strong, it can overwhelm the mind that sees the faults. Furthermore, although Jowo Rinpoche holds the Madhyamaka view and Serlingpa holds the Cittamatra true appearance, there are superior and inferior aspects from the point of view of the view, but because they were obtained by relying on the general Mahayana path sequence and the mind of enlightenment, Serlingpa is considered to be unmatched. Do not focus on the aspect of virtues, and do not listen to the examination from the aspect of faults, even if it is a broken vow, etc., you must treat it without distinction even up to listening to a single verse. As it says in the Cloud of Jewels Sutra: By relying on the lama, you realize that virtue increases and non-virtue decreases, so for the Khenpo, whether he is learned or unlearned, whether he knows or does not know, whether he has discipline or is undisciplined, you should generate the perception of the Buddha. Just as you have joy and faith in the Buddha, you should also have faith and joy in the Khenpo. You should generate respect and service for the Acharyas, and by relying on them, the accumulation of enlightenment that is not complete will become complete, and the afflictions that are not
