By accomplishing what the teacher has taught, one truly pleases his mind. So it is said. Among these, the first is: The Fifty Stanzas says: One's own samaya teacher, whether giving or not giving, son or wife, one should always serve with one's own life. What need is there to mention wavering possessions? Thus giving, to all the Buddhas, it becomes a constant offering. That offering is a collection of merit, and from that collection, supreme accomplishment arises. So it is said. Also, Lhasorwa said: If one offers bad things while good things are available, the samaya is broken and the lama is displeased. But if there is nothing but bad things, there is no fault. The Fifty Stanzas also says: Because of the desire for the inexhaustible nature, whatever is slightly pleasing, whatever is extremely special, that and that one should offer to the lama. This seems to be in accordance with that. Also, from the student's point of view, this is the best way to accumulate merit, so it is necessary to do so. From the lama's point of view, it is not necessary to pay attention to that. Sharawa said: One who is pleased by practice and does not pay attention to even a small amount of material things is called a lama. If it is the opposite of that, one cannot become a lama who accomplishes liberation. The second is: bathing, anointing, massaging, wiping, and taking care of illness, etc., and praising their qualities, etc. The third is: practicing in a way that does not contradict the instructions, and that is the most important thing. As it is said in the Jataka: The offering that is made in return for benefit is to practice according to the words of instruction. Because it is said so. If one must practice according to the lama's words, then if the lama one relies on leads one into an unreasonable path or engages in actions that contradict the three vows, should one do that? If so, then the Vinaya Sutra says: If one speaks of what is not Dharma, one should reject it. The Cloud of Jewels also says: For virtuous things, one should act in accordance with them, and for non-virtuous things, one should not act in accordance with them. So it is said, so one should not listen to his instructions. Not entering into unreasonable things is clearly recorded in the Twelfth Jataka. However, one should not use those as reasons to be disrespectful, contemptuous, or abusive towards him. As the Lama Fifty Stanzas says: If one cannot do it with reason, one should discipline the one who cannot with words. So it is said, one should explain and discipline well, and not

One should enter into it. Also, when serving in that way, the Ornament of the Sutras states: "He enjoys the share of the Dharma, possesses qualities, and serves the spiritual friend excellently, not for impure motives." As it is said, one needs to enjoy the share of the Dharma. Potowa said: "When Ananda was appointed as the long-term attendant of the Teacher, the Teacher did not allow him to wear clothes that he had not worn, nor to eat the leftovers of his meals, nor to go before the Teacher at any time. He considered this to be serving the Teacher, and this was with the future person in mind. We ourselves do not value the Dharma at all, but we value the quality of tea very much, whether it is taken to heart or not is all valued, this is a sign of fundamental decay." How long should one serve? Potowa said: "If one 'Tare' comes to me, it adds a burden, if one 'Tare' leaves, it reduces a burden. It is not possible to live alone, so it should be extended for a long time with moderate distance, and it must be practiced in this way." Fourth, the benefits of serving are: approaching the state of Buddhahood, the Buddhas rejoice, not lacking spiritual friends, not falling into the lower realms, evil deeds and afflictions are difficult to overcome, not contradicting the conduct of Bodhisattvas, and having mindfulness of it, the accumulation of qualities becomes higher and higher, and all temporary and ultimate benefits are accomplished. Moreover, by serving in this way, one obtains virtuous intention and action, thereby accomplishing the benefit of oneself and others, and perfecting the accumulations. As it is said in the Tree Array Sutra: "Sons of good family, Bodhisattvas who are completely seized by spiritual friends will not fall into the lower realms. Bodhisattvas who are thought of by spiritual friends will not act contrary to the precepts of Bodhisattvas. Bodhisattvas who are protected by spiritual friends are manifestly superior to the world. Bodhisattvas who have served spiritual friends practice without forgetting in all activities. Bodhisattvas who are completely held by spiritual friends are difficult to be overcome by actions and afflictions." And, "Sons of good family, remembered by spiritual friends
