It is said so. Also in the Jataka it says: The virtuous are not deceived by anyone, One should cultivate virtue with the conduct of taming. Near him, the dust of his qualities, Even without special request, one will be contaminated. It is said so. From the mouth of Potowa: We are mostly in danger of becoming rags, Just as dragging rags will stick to dung, but not to gold. The qualities of that virtuous friend will not be infected, but some faults will be infected, so do not hesitate at all times. Fifth, the fault of not relying on is: If the way of relying on as a virtuous friend is wrong, in this life one will be troubled by diseases and many demons, and in the next life one will suffer immeasurable sufferings of evil destinies, and the time will be immeasurable. In the Vajrapani Empowerment Tantra it says: Blessed One, what is the ripening of those who despise the teacher? The Blessed One said: Vajrapani, the world with gods will be afraid, do not say that. Lord of Secrets, but let me say a little, hero, listen carefully. Unbearable things like Avici, Whatever hells I have spoken of, It is said to be their abode. There it is endless kalpas. Therefore, in all ways, Never disrespect him. And in the Fifty Verses it also says: He who reviles the teacher, With plagues, leprosy, and all diseases, Demons, epidemics, and all poisons, That great fool will die. Kings, fire, and venomous snakes, Water and dakinis, Thieves, Demons and heretics, They will kill and sentient beings will go to hell. Never of the teachers, Do not disturb their minds at all, If done out of ignorance, One will surely be tormented in hell. Terrible hells such as Avici, Whatever hell is taught, Those who revile the teacher, It is truly said that they dwell there. And, as quoted in the difficult explanation of the Black Enemy Treatise by the great scholar Shantipa: Just listening to one verse, Whoever does not regard the lama as (Buddha), He will be born a hundred times in the abode of dogs, He will be born with a mole. It is said so. Furthermore, those who have not developed qualities

Those that are not born do not arise, and those that are born also decline. According to the Samadhi of the Present Buddha, if one dwells on it with a mind of torment, contempt, or hatred, there is no possibility of attaining merit. It is the same even if one does not generate the thought of a teacher. Thus, if one does not generate respect and the thought of a lama or teacher for the individuals of the three vehicles and the Dharma-teaching monks, it is impossible for them to attain the Dharma they have not attained or for the Dharma they have attained not to be wasted, because disrespect will cause the Dharma to decline. So it is said. If one relies on an unwholesome spiritual friend and a bad companion, then merits will gradually decrease, and all faults will increase, thereby generating all unpleasantness, so one should abandon them in every way. In the Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness, it says: The basis of all attachment, hatred, and delusion is a bad friend, who is like a poisonous tree. And in the Nirvana Sutra, it also says: Bodhisattvas fear bad friends, unlike fearing drunken elephants, etc., because the latter only harm the body, while the former harm both virtue and purity of mind. It is also said that those two only harm the physical body and the Dharma body, and cannot cast one into the lower realms, but (bad friends) can certainly cast one. In the Chapter on Truthfulness, it also says: Those whose minds are seized by the snake of bad friends, and who have abandoned the antidote of the virtuous friend, if they hear the precious Dharma, alas, they will fall from the great cliff of heedlessness. In the Collection of Friends, it also says: One who has no faith and is stingy, who speaks falsely and is a slanderer, the wise should not make friends, and should not associate with sinful people. If those who commit sins, even if those who do not commit sins rely on them, they will suspect that they are committing sins, and unpleasantness will also increase. A person who should not be relied upon, if relied upon, will become faulty due to his faults. Just as putting an arrow smeared with poison into a quiver, even those not smeared with poison will be contaminated. So it is said. An unwholesome spiritual friend is one on whom one relies, and the blameworthy misdeeds, along with their nature, that one had before do not decrease, and those that one did not have before will newly increase.
