If one merely recites them orally without putting them into practice, not only will the great scriptures not appear as key instructions, but one will also see those scriptures as merely limiting external knowledge, and thus abandon them. Because the contents of those great scriptures almost all need to be analyzed and studied by their respective discriminating wisdoms. If these contents are abandoned during practice, how can one generate the conviction that they are the essence of key instructions? If they are not the essence of key instructions, then what key instruction master can find a key instruction more excellent than them? If so, if the profound and vast Sutra Pitaka, together with its commentaries, can appear as key instructions, then the profound Tantra Pitaka, together with the great treatises of its commentaries, can also effortlessly appear as key instructions, thereby generating the conviction that they are the essence of key instructions. In this way, the wrong views that consider them merely as appendages to the Dharma that are not the actual practice of key instructions will be completely eliminated. Easily obtaining the Buddha's intention: Although the scriptures containing commentaries are the essence of key instructions, for a beginner who has not fully practiced, even if he engages in them without relying on the oral instructions of the guru, he will not be able to obtain the intention. Even if he can obtain it, it will require an extremely long time and extremely great effort. If one relies on the oral instructions of the guru, one will easily realize it. This key instruction can easily give certainty about the key points of the Buddha's words and treatises, and the way in which this is done will be explained in detail in each chapter. Major misdeeds naturally cease: As stated in the "White Lotus Sutra" and the "Chapter on the Truthful One," if one does not understand that all the Buddha's teachings directly or indirectly indicate the method of attaining Buddhahood, but instead regards some as methods of attaining Buddhahood and some as obstacles to attaining Buddhahood, thereby distinguishing between good and bad, whether the types are the same, and the Greater and Lesser Vehicles, thinking that Bodhisattvas should study this and should not study that, thereby abandoning certain contents, one will become one who abandons the Dharma. In the "Sutra Compendium of All Distinctions," it says: Manjushri, the obscuration of the karma of abandoning the sacred Dharma is slight. Manjushri, if someone thinks that some of the teachings spoken by the Tathagata are good and some are bad, this is abandoning the Dharma. Whoever abandons the Dharma, by abandoning the Dharma, slanders the Tathagata.

It is creating negative karma. It is speaking ill of the Sangha. If one says, "This is reasonable, this is not reasonable," it is abandoning the Dharma. If one says, "This was spoken for the sake of Bodhisattvas," if one says, "This was spoken for the sake of Hearers," it is abandoning the Dharma. If one says, "This was spoken for the sake of Solitary Buddhas," it is abandoning the Dharma. If one says, "This is not the training of Bodhisattvas," it is abandoning the Dharma. Thus it is said. If one abandons the Dharma, the fault is extremely heavy. As it is said in the Samadhiraja Sutra: Whoever in this Jambudvipa, destroys all the stupas, whoever abandons the Sutras, their sin is especially superior. Whoever, like the sands of the Ganges, kills all the Arhats, whoever abandons the Sutras, their sin is especially superior. Thus it is said. In general, although there appear to be many doors for the arising of abandoning the Dharma, this door shown earlier appears to be the greatest, therefore one should strive to abandon it. That is also because merely obtaining the ascertainment as shown earlier will cause it to be averted, therefore the misdeed will naturally cease. That ascertainment should be sought from the chapter on the Truthful One and by viewing the White Lotus of the Good Dharma extensively, and the other doors of abandoning the Dharma should be understood from the Sutra Compendium of All Dharmas. Regarding how to listen to and explain the Dharma that possesses the two greatnesses, there are three: the manner of listening, the manner of explaining, and the manner of what should be done in common at the end. First, there are three: contemplating the benefits of hearing the Dharma, generating respect for the Dharma and the speaker of the Dharma, and the actual conduct of listening. The first is: From the Collection of Hearers: By hearing, one will know all dharmas. By hearing, one will turn away from sin. By hearing, one will abandon what is meaningless. By hearing, one will attain Nirvana. Thus it is said. Just as a house is well covered, and one enters inside covered by darkness, even though forms exist, one cannot see them like someone with eyes. Similarly, in this world, even if a person born into a good family is intelligent, they will not know the Dharma of sin and virtue until they have heard it. Just as someone with eyes can see forms with a lamp, similarly, one can clearly understand the Dharma of virtue and sin through hearing. Thus it is said.
