The means to accomplish all long-term benefits and happiness is the words of the Victorious Ones, for the only one who is free from all errors in indicating what to adopt and abandon is the Buddha alone. As it is also said in the Uttaratantra: "Why is the Victorious One more wise than any wise person in this world? Because he knows everything perfectly and completely, not by others. Therefore, do not disturb any Sutra spoken by the sage himself. Destroying the way of the Muni will also harm the sacred Dharma." Thus it is said. Therefore, the teachings of the Victorious Ones, such as the Sutra Pitaka and the precious Tantra Pitaka, are the supreme instructions. However, if one enters the teachings with one's own strength without having a qualified commentary and the oral instructions of the holy ones, then future disciples will not be able to find the meaning. Therefore, the great chariots composed treatises of commentary and oral instructions. Therefore, if the oral instructions are pure, then it is necessary to give certainty to the great treatises. No matter how much one studies the oral instructions, if one cannot give certainty to the meaning of the teachings and great commentaries, or if one shows a path that is not in accordance with them, then it should be abandoned. If the great treatises are made into teachings without the key points of practice, and it is understood that there are separate oral instructions that show the essential meaning of the key points of practice, and thus it is held that the holy Dharma itself has two separate teachings, explanation and practice, this hinders the generation of great respect for the stainless Sutras and Tantras and the treatises of stainless commentaries. And it should be known that holding them in contempt, thinking that they only judge the outer scope without showing the inner meaning, is accumulating the obscuration of the karma of abandoning the Dharma. Therefore, for those who desire liberation, the supreme instruction that does not deceive is the great treatises. However, because of one's own stupidity and other reasons, one cannot gain certainty by relying solely on the treatises as the supreme instruction. Therefore, one must rely on the oral instructions of the holy ones to seek certainty in them. One should seek oral instructions in this way, and one should not think that the treatises are only judging the outer scope and have no essence, while the oral instructions are showing the inner meaning and are supreme.

From the mouth of Jangchub Rinchen: To be proficient in pith instructions does not mean to understand only a small text like the "Baeu Bum" (A Basketful of Jewels), but to understand all the scriptures as pith instructions. Jowo Je's (Atisha's) disciple, Gompa Rinchen Lama, also said: Through Atisha's pith instructions, my body, speech, and mind were shattered into dust in one sitting. Now, all the scriptures have become pith instructions. It is necessary to understand it in this way. The precious teacher said: If, after learning a lot of Dharma, one needs to seek other ways to practice, that is a mistake. Like this, although one has learned a lot of Dharma for a long time, one does not know how to practice at all. When one wants to practice, one needs to seek methods from other places. These are all mistakes made because one has not understood what was said before. What is taught here is, as stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: The Teacher's sacred Dharma has two aspects: scripture and realization. Like this, there are only two Dharmas: scripture and realization. The scripture is the way to take the Dharma into practice, to establish the method of practice. Realization is to practice according to how it was established after it has been established, so these two are cause and effect. For example, when racing a horse, one must first show the horse the racetrack, and after it has been shown, it runs there. If the racetrack is shown elsewhere and the race is run elsewhere, it becomes a joke. Similarly, if one establishes something through hearing and thinking, but then practices something else, how can one accomplish it? As it says in the final stage of the Stages of Meditation: Moreover, whatever is realized by the wisdom arising from hearing and thinking should be meditated upon by the wisdom arising from meditation, and not otherwise, just as one shows the racetrack to the horse and then it runs there. Like this, this pith instruction, from the method of relying on a spiritual friend to shamatha and vipashyana, completely gathers all the essential points of the path, including the scriptures and their commentaries. For all of these, those that need to be practiced with placement meditation are practiced with placement meditation. Those that need to be examined and meditated upon are examined with discriminating wisdom, and then led in a sequence of integrating them into practice, so all the scriptures appear as pith instructions. If it is not like this, for some parts of the path that are not completely whole, without the wisdom of discrimination,
