And, one should also think about how much (bitter water) one will drink if one does not learn the path to liberation! This is just a metaphor; one should contemplate the perfections and sufferings of samsara, that there is nothing that one has not experienced, and therefore one should feel disgusted. Enjoying happiness is for the sake of satisfaction, but no matter how much one enjoys the happiness of samsara, one will never be satisfied; instead, one's craving will increase more and more. Therefore, one will wander in samsara for a long time, and the extremely unbearable sufferings that those happinesses cannot even slightly withstand will be experienced countless times. The "Letter to a Friend" says: "Just as a leper afflicted by worms relies entirely on fire for happiness, yet it does not subside, know that attachment to desires is the same." And, the "Collected Expositions on the Perfection of Wisdom" also says: "Having obtained those desires, serving them as if for a single day, and not being satisfied by accumulating them greatly, what disease is greater than that?" And, the "Admonition to Study" also says: "Where is the place in samsara that one has not reached hundreds of times? Where is the happiness that one has not experienced many times before? Where is the glory like the beautiful tail feathers of a peacock that one has not obtained? Even if one obtains it, craving still increases. Is there not suffering that one has not experienced many times before? What desires in samsara can be satisfied? If there is no sentient being who has not gone to sleep hungry, then how can there be no renunciation for those in samsara?" One should think as it is said. Furthermore, if one thinks as it is said in the "Eliminating Sorrow Sutra," one will feel extremely disgusted, because: Again and again in hell, the molten copper that one has drunk, even the water in the ocean is not as much as that. When one becomes a dog and a pig, the impure things that one has eaten are much more than Mount Sumeru, the king of mountains. Having been completely separated from friends, the tears that one has cried in samsara, the ocean cannot contain them. Because of fighting each other, the heads that have been cut off, piled up so high, even exceed the realm of Brahma. Having become a worm, extremely hungry, the soil and fertilizer that one has eaten, if one were to fill the ocean of milk with it, it would be completely filled. It is as it is said. In that case, the "Array of Trees Sutra" says:

Now, regarding the body wasted meaninglessly due to desire, recall all the past experiences. Today, to thoroughly seek enlightenment, strictly adhere to asceticism, and here, with asceticism, sever desire. You, regarding the body wasted meaninglessly due to desire, recall all the past experiences. You have not satisfied beings as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, nor have you heard such words from the Buddha. As it is said, no matter how much worldly perfection is attained, remember the immeasurable suffering of being deceived and meaningless, and the countless times of wasting the body as before. If you do not strive now, think that it will become like that in the future, and generate renunciation. In the presence of the venerable one, it was said: Lord Atisha said, from beginningless time, we have obtained various kinds of bodies, but there has never been a situation like now where we practice Mahayana Dharma, so we must strive. When Geshe taught, he said: We must be reborn many times in samsara, this has not yet become an experience, do not have hope. Until this thought arises, we must repeatedly think, and after it arises, we must also persevere. The fault of constantly abandoning the body is: The pile of bones of each being is as high as Mount Sumeru. As it is said, the bones left behind by each being taking and abandoning bodies, if not destroyed, are more than Mount Sumeru. The fault of constantly taking rebirth is: The edge of mothers is like a small mustard seed, even if the mountain body is calculated, the earth cannot bear it. This is what it says. The previous ones do not refer to the number that one being has not done, because the explanation of this quotes the sutra: Monks, for example, if someone takes a clod of earth the size of a mustard seed from this great earth, and then says: This is my mother, this is my mother's mother. Monks, the soil on this great earth will soon be exhausted, but people's mothers will not be exhausted. Because the sutra shows the relationship of inheritance from one's own mother to the mother's mother, etc., and the sutra also says the edge of mothers. The reason why this becomes a cause of renunciation is: The Four Hundred Verses says: When the initial cause of a single fruit cannot appear, then for a single fruit,
