Moreover, the essential points contrary to that have been summarized by the Sugata, so it is extremely important for accomplishing liberation, and the key summary of practice is also important, so disciples must be guided in that order. If, through contemplating the truth of suffering, there is no genuine renunciation of samsara, then wanting to attain liberation will just be words, and whatever is done will become the cause of suffering. If, through contemplating the truth of the origin of suffering, one does not properly understand the root of samsara—karma and afflictions—then, like shooting an arrow without seeing the target, the essential points of the path will be missed, and taking what is not the path to liberation from existence as the path, effort will be fruitless. Moreover, if one does not understand the suffering and its origin that are to be abandoned, then one will not recognize the liberation of their cessation, so the pursuit of liberation will just be arrogance. Second, the actual practice of contemplating suffering is divided into two: Thinking about the general suffering of samsara, and thinking about individual sufferings. The first is divided into three: thinking about the eight sufferings, thinking about the six sufferings, and thinking about the three sufferings. The first is: From the Letter to a Friend: "Poverty of desires and death, and diseases, old age, and other sufferings, be disgusted with samsara, the place of their origin." Like this, meditate. Among them, cultivating disgust for samsara is to think of it as the source of many sufferings. The sufferings are: the four actually indicated, such as poverty of desires, and the four summarized by the word "etc.", a total of eight. These eight were spoken by the Bhagavan in many sutras when recognizing the truth of suffering. For the cultivation of intermediate and common objects, all common parts have been explained in the small part, and should also be adopted here. For the uncommon cultivation contents, if the intelligence is strong, cultivate as written, and if the intelligence is weak, abandon the quoted scriptures and only cultivate the essence of the meaning that is appropriate to the situation. These are analytical meditations, but do not let the mind go to any virtue, non-virtue, or neutral other than the object of meditation, and prevent mental scattering, etc. Also, do not fall into dullness and agitation, but meditate in a state of clear and bright awareness, with concentration. As it says in Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior: Recitation and asceticism, etc.,

Even if practiced diligently for a long time, if done with a distracted mind, the wise say it is meaningless. Thus, all virtuous deeds done with a distracted mind have small results. Also, in the Sutra on Cultivating Faith in the Great Vehicle, it is said: 'Sons of good family, by these various means, Bodhisattvas generate faith in the Great Vehicle. Whatever arises from the Great Vehicle, all of it should be known to arise from a non-distracted mind, truly contemplating the meaning and the Dharma.' Thus it is said. Among these, a non-distracted mind is one that does not wander from the virtuous object of focus. Meaning and Dharma are meaning and words; truly contemplating is examining and thinking with the wisdom of individual discernment. This shows that all practices for accomplishing qualities require these two. Therefore, all accomplishments of the three vehicles require a single-pointed Shamatha, either the actual entity or something in accordance with it, where the mind does not wander from the virtuous object of focus; and Vipassana, either the actual entity or something in accordance with it, which individually examines the virtuous object of focus, distinguishing the suchness and the extent of it. Thus it is said that two are needed. Likewise, in the Holy Sandhinirmocana Sutra, it is said: Maitreya, also all worldly or supramundane virtuous dharmas of the Shravakas, Bodhisattvas, or Tathagatas should be known as the fruit of Shamatha and Vipassana. Thus it is said. Here, if one does not practice both the actual entity of Shamatha and Vipassana and what accords with them, then all the qualities of the three vehicles will not necessarily become the fruit of the actual entity of Shamatha and Vipassana. Thus, among the eight sufferings, the first, contemplating the suffering of birth, has five aspects. Birth is suffering because it is accompanied by suffering, namely: the beings in hell, the always suffering pretas, those born from wombs, and those born from eggs. These four are born with many intense feelings of suffering at the time of birth. Birth is suffering because it is accompanied by a bad place, namely: all formations of the three realms are accompanied by a bad place corresponding to the category of afflictions, therefore they are not workable and not independent.
