Just as some animals immediately fall into a cliff, while others rest on the edge, similarly, as stated in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "Having repeatedly come to the happy realms, and having enjoyed much happiness, after death, one falls into the sufferings of the lower realms, enduring unbearable suffering for a long time." Also, as stated in the Letter to a Disciple: "Entering the ever-revolving wheel of samsara, merely dwelling within it and thinking it is happiness, one will certainly, involuntarily, gradually experience hundreds and thousands of times, wandering with beings of the same and different kinds." Therefore, one should generate great renunciation towards the happy realms as well, just as towards the lower realms. As stated in the Four Hundred Verses: "The wise see even the heavens as fearful as hell; in all places, is there any existence that does not generate fear?" Also, as stated in the Collection of Precious Qualities: "Those with minds attached to samsara constantly wander." Also, as stated in the Letter to a Disciple: "The more beings generate the thought of happiness, the thicker the darkness of ignorance becomes; the more beings generate the thought of suffering, the thinner the darkness of ignorance becomes; the more one cultivates attachment, the more the flames of desire blaze; the more one cultivates the contemplation of impurity, the more the flames of desire are extinguished." From beginningless time, we have been accustomed to grasping at the perfections of existence as happiness and to superimposing beauty on things. To counteract these habits, we should become accustomed to cultivating the contemplation of suffering and impurity. If we cultivate these, we can reverse these habits; if we do not cultivate them, ignorance and desire will increase, and we will wander in samsara. Therefore, cultivating the faults of existence is crucial. Therefore, for the mind training in the common path of the intermediate being, there are four aspects: the actual training of intention, the measure of its arising, the elimination of wrong conceptions about it, and the determination of the nature of the path to liberation. The first aspect is further divided into two: Identifying the mind seeking liberation, and the means of generating it. First, liberation means freedom from bondage, and karma and afflictions are the two factors that bind us to samsara, the control of these two

Through the power of realms (kham gyi dbang gis), the desire realm and the other three realms; if divided by travelers, there are five or six realms such as gods; in terms of the gateway of birth, there are four such as womb-born. Connecting the aggregates in continuity is the nature of bondage, so liberation from that is liberation. Wanting to attain that is the mind that seeks liberation. That liberation is not merely the cessation of actions and afflictions arising, because those who are born do not remain in the second moment. Since it does not depend on causes such as cultivating antidotes, everyone would be liberated without effort, which would be a fault. Therefore, if the antidote does not arise, there will be a connection in the future. The power of the antidote arising reverses the connection. Second, the method of generating that is, for example, just as the desire to obtain relief from the suffering of thirst depends on seeing the undesirable aspect of being tormented by thirst, so too, the desire to obtain liberation, which is the near pacification of the suffering of the aggregates of grasping, also depends on seeing the faults of the aggregates of grasping, which are of the nature of suffering. If, after contemplating the faults of existence, the mind of wanting to abandon it does not arise, the desire to pacify that suffering will not arise. As the Four Hundred Verses says: "Whoever here has no aversion, How could that person have respect for peace? Like one's own home, if one is attached to existence, It is also very difficult to be liberated from here." Therefore, there are two methods for generating the desire for liberation: thinking from the perspective of suffering and origin, and thinking from the perspective of the twelve links of dependent origination. The first is divided into two: thinking about the faults of the suffering truth of samsara, and thinking about the order of engagement in the origin of samsara. The first is divided into two: explaining the intention of the suffering truth being taught first among the four truths, and actually meditating on suffering. The first is: origin is the cause and suffering truth is its result, so origin comes first and suffering truth comes later. So why did the Bhagavan not conform to the order of things themselves, and say: Monks, this is the noble truth of suffering, this is the noble truth of origin? In response, the Teacher taught in reverse order of cause and effect, which has a great point of practice, so there is no fault. And how is that?
