So, it is like this. If the trainees themselves do not initially generate an undeluded intention to be liberated from samsara, then the root is severed, so how can they be led to liberation? Therefore, initially, the trainees are obscured by the darkness of ignorance, and they are deceived by the perverted view that holds the perfections of samsara as happiness, which is suffering. The Four Hundred says: If this ocean of suffering does not exist in all aspects, then why do children, drowning in it, not generate fear? As it is said. This is truly not happiness but suffering. Thus, having explained the various aspects of suffering, it is necessary to generate weariness, therefore, the truth of suffering is explained first. Then, when one sees oneself drowning in the ocean of suffering and desires to be liberated from it, one sees that suffering must be reversed, and one knows that it will not be reversed if the cause is not reversed. Then, one wonders what kind of cause it is, and thus one comes to know the truth of the origin, so the truth of the origin is explained after that. Then, the wisdom of knowing the truth of the origin arises, that the suffering of samsara is produced by contaminated karma, and that karma is produced by afflictions, and that the root of afflictions is self-grasping, and when one sees that self-grasping can also be reversed, one vows to realize the cessation of suffering, so the truth of cessation is explained after that. Now, if the truth of suffering is taught, a desire for liberation will arise, so it is reasonable to teach the truth of cessation after the truth of suffering, if you think so, there is no fault. Because at that time, although there is a desire for liberation, thinking 'if only I could attain the cessation of suffering,' the cause of suffering has not been identified, and it has not been seen that the cause can be reversed, so one does not think that cessation must be realized, because one does not grasp liberation as something to be attained. Thus, when one thinks that the cessation of liberation must be realized, one wonders what the path to go there is, and thus one enters the truth of the path, so the truth of the path is explained last. Thus, the Uttaratantra says: Disease is to be known, the cause of disease is to be abandoned, the state of bliss is to be attained, medicine is to be taken. Suffering, its cause, its cessation, and likewise the path, are to be known, abandoned, realized, and cultivated. As it is said. Therefore, the four truths are taught many times in all the great and small vehicles, and are the means of entering samsara...
