Also, seeing that these key points are summarized into ten aspects, he proclaimed the ten white paths of action. As it says in the Treasury of Knowledge: From these, to summarize briefly, Whether good or non-good, whatever the case, The paths of action are proclaimed as ten. And also in the Vinaya-vibhaṅga: Guarding speech and restraining the mind well, Not doing any non-virtue with the body, If these three paths of action are well cultivated, Then the path spoken of by the sages will be attained. Thus it is proclaimed. Having known the ten black paths of action with their fruits, even from the motivation of them, one should guard against them and not mix with the three doors, and rely on these ten virtuous paths of action. This is the indispensable basis for accomplishing all three vehicles and the two benefits of individuals. Therefore, the Buddhas repeatedly praised it from many doors. As it says in the Sāgaranāgarājaparipṛcchā: The so-called virtuous dharmas are the root support for the perfection of gods and humans. It is the root support for the enlightenment of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas. It is the root support for unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. What is the root support? It is these ten virtuous actions. And in the Nāgarāja: For example, all villages, cities, towns, regions, countries, and the palaces of kings, and all grass, trees, shrubs, medicines, and trees, and all the ends of actions, and all the collections of seeds, and all the crops grow, cultivate, plow, and arise on the earth, and their place is the earth. Nāgarāja, similarly, these ten virtuous paths of action are the place of birth among gods and humans, the place of attaining the fruits of śrāmaṇas who are learners and non-learners, the place of the enlightenment of pratyekabuddhas, and all the practices of bodhisattvas, and all the dharmas of the Buddhas. Thus it is proclaimed. Therefore, the meaning of praising the precepts of abandoning the ten non-virtues in the Daśabhūmika-sūtra, in the Madhyamakāvatāra it is also said: Ordinary beings and the children of the Buddhas, Those who have attained peace for themselves, The excellent cause of the children of the Buddhas, The cause of higher rebirth is none other than precepts. Thus it is summarized and proclaimed. Thus, for each precept, one should repeatedly rely on the mind of protection.

Even if there is nothing to protect, it is extremely shameful to say, "I am a Mahayanist." As it says in the Sutra of the Essence of the Earth: These ten virtuous paths will lead to Buddhahood. If someone does not protect even a single path of virtuous action for the duration of their life, yet says, "I am a Mahayanist, I seek the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment," that person is extremely hypocritical, speaks great lies, deceives the world in front of all the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, and is a nihilist. They will die in delusion and fall into evil destinies. Thus it is said. Falling into evil destinies should be understood as a synonym for all evil realms. Determining actions and their results has three aspects: the results of black actions, the results of white actions, and showing other classifications of actions. The first has three aspects: the actual path of black actions, the difference between heavy and light, and showing the results of these. The first is: What is killing? Although it is said that this is summarized by five factors: the basis, the perception, the intention, the affliction, and the final result, the middle three can be summarized into intention, and adding the action, it can be summarized into four factors: the basis, the intention, the action, and the final result. Explaining it in this way is easier to understand and does not contradict the meaning. Among these, the basis for killing is: sentient beings with life. Moreover, if the killer kills themselves, there is the sin of the action, but considering that there is no final result, it is said in the "Stages of Yogic Practice": other living beings. Thus it is said. Intention has three aspects, among which perception has four: when the basis is a sentient being, perceiving it as a sentient being; perceiving it as a non-sentient being; when the basis is a non-sentient being, perceiving it as a non-sentient being; and perceiving it as a sentient being. The first and third perceptions are not mistaken, while the second and fourth are mistaken. In this case, having a specific intention, for example, thinking of killing only Devadatta, but mistakenly killing an offering when starting the action, there is no sin of the actual deed, so in such a case, an unconfused perception is necessary. If, during the action, one intends to kill whatever arises, having a general intention, then an unconfused perception is not necessary. This method should be applied accordingly to the remaining nine as well.
