It is not a supreme refuge, and by relying on it, one cannot be liberated from all suffering. Whenever and wherever one takes refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, suffering, the arising of all suffering, the complete cessation of suffering, the happiness of the eightfold noble path, will lead to nirvana, and one observes the four noble truths with wisdom, this is the main refuge, it is the supreme refuge, and by relying on it, one will be liberated from all suffering. As it is said. Here, the stories of the accomplishment of heretical wind snares, etc., are taken as examples. To accomplish everything one wishes, at the beginning of any virtuous activity, offer to the Three Jewels, and after taking refuge, pray for accomplishment, then it will be easily accomplished. To quickly attain Buddhahood, as it is said in the Lion's Roar Sutra: With faith, one will abandon idleness. As it is said, having obtained the special leisure and opportunity, and having met the refuge, one should study the special path, and thus one will attain Buddhahood before long. Having remembered the benefits in this way, one should take refuge three times a day and three times a night. One should not abandon and protect the Three Jewels even for the sake of joking or life, because the body, life, and possessions will inevitably separate unwillingly, and if one abandons the Three Jewels for their sake, then suffering will continuously arise in all lifetimes, no matter what happens, one should not abandon refuge, and one should repeatedly keep this in mind, and one should not speak words of abandoning refuge even for the sake of joking. Wherever one goes, one should learn to take refuge in that Tathagata, such instructions have been said by the previous teachers, but no source has been found. Thus, the six common trainings are as explained in the commentary on the Lamp for the Path, and the first three of the individual trainings are explained in the Sutra Pitaka, and the latter three are from the Six-Limbed Refuge, as it is said: Buddha images and fragments, with yellow patches sewn on, regard them as teachers with faith. All that the Buddha has said, do not slander, but take it on the crown of your head. One should regard both pure and impure individuals as holy.

Regarding what arises from the Compendium of Definitive Statements: These (teachings) from the words of the Kamapas, Nê'u zur pa spoke to Gsung thang ba, and we heard them together at the monastery. It is said that they arise from the Lamrim that was transmitted from him to Lum pa ba. The way in which violating those precepts becomes a cause for decline and abandonment is as follows: Some believe that if one violates the first three precepts of each, as well as the six of always taking refuge, not abandoning even for the sake of one's life, and making offerings to the Three Jewels, one abandons (refuge). Some believe that violating the latter three precepts of each, i.e., the nine, causes abandonment (of refuge), while the remainder become causes for decline. However, violating not abandoning even for the sake of one's life is actually abandoning refuge. Similarly, even if one does not abandon the Three Jewels, but holds to dualistic grasping towards teachers and so forth who are not in accordance with them, one also violates not speaking of others, and abandons (refuge) because one lacks confidence in refuge. If these do not occur, it is merely violating the precepts, and I think it is not a cause for abandonment. Thus, taking refuge is the great gate for entering the teachings of the Buddha. If taking refuge is not merely verbal, but relies on extraordinary power, one will not be overwhelmed by outer and inner obstacles, and the distinctions of qualities will be easily generated and difficult to decline, and thus will increase more and more. Therefore, as previously explained, it is crucial to take refuge through remembering fear and qualities, and to strive not to transgress its precepts. Thus, when one remembers death and fears thinking that one will be born in the lower realms after death, the refuge that protects from that is the Three Jewels. If one takes refuge in them and does not violate their precepts, how does refuge protect? The Compendium Sutra says: "I have shown you the path that cuts the pain of existence. The Tathagata is the teacher; you should do it." Thus, the Buddha is the teacher of refuge, and the Sangha is the companion who accomplishes refuge. Therefore, the actual refuge is the Dharma Jewel, and by obtaining it, one is liberated from fear. That ultimate Dharma Jewel is also, for the initial practitioner, the abandonment of abandoning just a portion of faults, and the realization of accomplishing just a portion of qualities, both of which become increasingly superior.
