Furthermore, refuge is taken with as much ability as possible, and it is written with love. Whatever one does and whatever needs arise, one should make offerings to the Three Jewels, pray, and abandon other worldly methods. No matter what one does or what needs one sees, one should rely on the Three Jewels and perform offerings and other actions that are in accordance with them. One should not rely on Bon and other things that are not in accordance with the Three Jewels in any way, and one should always trust in the Three Jewels. Understanding the benefits, taking refuge three times during the day and three times during the night is divided into two: the benefits that arise from the collection and those that arise from the essential instructions. The first is divided into two sets of four lines. The first set of four lines is about obtaining great merit: From the *Immortal Drum Sound Dharani*: "The Buddha, the Bhagavan, is inconceivable. The sacred Dharma is also inconceivable. The noble Sangha is also inconceivable. The ripening of those who have faith in the inconceivable is also inconceivable." And also from the *Perfection of Wisdom Condensed*: "If the merit of taking refuge had form, even this triple world would be too small to contain it. The great ocean, a treasure of water, cannot be measured with a container." As it is said. Obtaining joy and supreme joy: From the *Collection of Mindfulness*: "Whoever, day and night, remembers the Buddha, and truly takes refuge in the Buddha, those people have a good fortune." As it is said, combining the other two as well. Like this, being able to rely on the Three Jewels, thinking 'I have obtained a good fortune,' joy will increase more and more. Obtaining samadhi and purification: liberation is obtained through the training of samadhi and wisdom. The second set of four lines is about having great protection, which will be explained later. Obtaining the alleviation, complete exhaustion, and complete destruction of all obscurations of wrong views: Due to having faith in the teacher, the Dharma, and bad friends, and taking refuge based on that, the negative karma that has been accumulated will become small and be purified. One will be counted among the noble, truly gone ones, the noble beings, one's conduct will be the same as the teacher and Brahma, and one will become pleasing to the gods, delighting in the teachings.

What makes me happy is becoming an excellent person and pleasing the teacher and others. How do the gods rejoice? So-and-so is in accordance with those who take refuge in us, and after dying from there, they are reborn here, possessing the merit of taking refuge, and abiding many times, so they think that he will become our friend, rejoice in their hearts, and especially praise him, so it is especially praised. Among the eight benefits arising from the oral instructions, becoming an inner Buddhist is: Generally speaking, there are many ways to establish inner and outer, but it is said that Jowo (Atisha) and Shantipa distinguish by taking refuge, so it refers to those who have obtained refuge and do not abandon it. Therefore, to become a Buddhist for the first time, one must sincerely regard the Three Jewels as the teacher, etc. Without this, no matter what good deeds one does, one will not become a Buddhist. Becoming the basis of all vows is: The Commentary on the Treasury says: "Those who take refuge are the door to all vows that are truly taken." And the Seventy Verses on Taking Refuge also say: "A layman who takes refuge in the Three Jewels is the root of the eight precepts." It is said that taking refuge strengthens the thought of Nirvana and considers that vows arise from it. The obscurations of previously accumulated karma are lessened and exhausted: In the Compendium of Trainings, when showing that taking refuge can eliminate sins, it says: Here, the Jataka of the Pig is taken as an example. Just as the son of a god who was about to be born as a pig did not become a pig because he took refuge, because he took refuge, he purified the cause of bad destinies. Those who have gone to the Buddha for refuge will not fall into bad destinies. After abandoning the human body, they will obtain the body of the gods. It is also said that this is the case for the Dharma and the Sangha. Therefore, some of the previously accumulated sins will be lessened, and some will be exhausted. Accumulating great merit is: as mentioned before. Not falling into bad destinies is also: It can be known through the previous content. The obstacles of humans and non-humans cannot be stopped: The sutra says: People who are frightened by fear mostly take refuge in mountains and forests, as well as gardens and the trees of temples. That refuge is not the main one.
