Do not disbelieve, and do not act in accordance with those who slander. The three trainings for practice are: Regarding the painted images of the Buddha, no matter how good or bad, do not criticize them, do not place them in tiring places, do not show disrespect by using them as collateral, etc., abandon contempt, and regard them as objects of veneration like the teacher. As it is said in the "Letter to a Friend": "Even if the body of the Sugata is made of wood, the wise should respect it, no matter how it is made." The Vinaya-vibhanga states: Shedu Serkya said to the monks who were studying and not studying, "Elephant-headed one, what do you know about Dharma and non-Dharma?" Because he uttered eighteen different kinds of evil speech, he was born as a crocodile with eighteen different heads. From the time of the teacher Light Protector until the time of the Shakya king, he lived as an animal. The Vinaya-ksudraka states: After the teacher Wheel-Destroyer passed away, King Beautiful-Face had a great stupa built. A laborer mocked, "Starting to build such a great stupa, I don't know when it will be finished." He mocked twice. Later, when it was completed, he regretted it and used his wages to have a golden bell made and hung on the stupa. As a result, he was born as Good Fame, who had an ugly color, a small body, and a beautiful voice. Therefore, do not say of an image, "This is like this." Also, do not mock others for building images with good materials or building large images, and do not engage in speech or actions that are contrary to this. The great yogi offered Jowo (Atisha) an image of Manjushri and asked how good or bad it was. He said that if it was good, he would buy it with the four sho of gold given by Rongpa Gardge. Jowo said: There is nothing bad about the image of the venerable Manjushri, but the craftsman is mediocre, and then he placed it on his head. It is said that he treated all finished works in this way. One should also abandon disrespect towards Dharma teachings of four words or more, such as cutting scriptures, selling them as merchandise, placing them on bare ground, placing them in tiring places, carrying them together with shoes, using them as cushions, and all other disrespectful actions. The Dharma Jewel.

How to be respectful? When the Geshe Kyennga (a title for a respected teacher) saw the scriptures being invited, he would stand up with his palms together. Later, when he was unable to stand, he would join his palms. When Jowo (Lord Atisha) went to Ngari (western Tibet), a mantra practitioner would not listen to his teachings. When a scribe saw someone smearing the scriptures with saliva, Jowo could not bear it and said, "Ah! It is not right, not right." That mantra practitioner then developed faith and listened to the teachings. Sharawa also said, "We are playing games with the Dharma. Disrespect for the Dharma and those who teach it is the cause of the decline of wisdom. This much ignorance is enough for now; do not accumulate the causes of ignorance. What good will it do to be more ignorant than this?" Do not scold or despise monks or renunciates who merely hold the signs of practice, or even their signs. Do not divide into factions and regard them as enemies, saying, "You are with us." Respect them as you would the Sangha Jewel. From "Encouraging Higher Intention": Those who desire qualities and live in the forest should not examine the faults of others. Do not generate thoughts such as, "I am superior to others, I am the best." Pride is the root of all carelessness. Do not despise inferior monks, or you will not attain liberation for an eon. This is the order in this teaching. Thus it is said. Even in a place where you might step on a yellow cloth belonging to a precious teacher or a great yogi, do not step on it. Instead, shake it off and place it in a clean place. Learn to act in this way. The more respect you have for the Three Jewels, the more respect beings will have for you. From the Samadhiraja Sutra: Whatever kind of action you do, you will receive a corresponding result. Thus it is said. There are six common practices. Among them, remembering the distinctions and qualities of the Three Jewels and repeatedly taking refuge, as previously explained, is the difference between outsiders and insiders, and the differences within the three, and repeatedly contemplating their qualities. Remembering great kindness, always diligently make offerings, and also offer the essence of food and drink. From the Samadhiraja Sutra: Even if one obtains food through the merit of the Buddha, do not treat it like a child.
